The need to input text in a faster, accurate and in an easier way is still not solved. We only have better solutions than before. But not perfect. We have seen Alphanumeric 9-key keypad, T9 Predictive text input, Compact QWERTY keyboards, virtual on-screen keyboards and most recently Swype – a continuous finger-based motion text-input. Still not there yet. So believes a company called 3qubits.
Called as “8pen”, this mobile application enables text input through finger gestures. This is one of those concepts which is best described through the video. So, just watch this short video.
It is indeed quite radical on the first-look. But once you get used to it, it seems to be the natural way of texting faster, accurate and easier. The design seems to be inspired from game controllers especially the xbox and ps3 controllers, where you have that central joystick that can rotate clockwise and anti-clockwise. There are special tricks to input upper case, special characters and even phrases! Offered as an application that can be installed, 8pen is currently available only for android platforms.
In their own words “The 8pen™ allows for the replacement of the conventional keyboard on all devices capable of detecting gestures, in particular mobile phones with touch screens, modern remote controls or game controllers. Its advantage lies mainly in the fact that it is possible to input text faster than using conventional layouts on small devices, while at the same time mimicking human hand-writing. Moreover, the simplicity of the gestures involved greatly reduces the problem of mistyping that frequently occurs with the classical layout due to the lack of space. For the same reason, it is possible to write without viewing, as only the central region is needed as a reference for starting and ending a movement.”
