91mobiles Knockout: Micromax Funbook vs. HCL ME U1

|April 8 2012 |Android Tablets, Micromax, Affordable Tablets

We give you the Knockout between the two latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets that have been launched in the market recently- Micromax Funbook and HCL ME U1

Micromax announced its much-awaited entry into the tablet market on Tuesday with its Micromax Funbook tablet (model number: P300) available at a price of just Rs 6,499. This tablet is specifically targeted towards the youth.  The hype and popularity surrounding the Micromax Funbook tablet was such that two of the top 10 trends on Twitter that day were related to the tablet.

The mini-HDMI port provides the tablet with some exciting, although un-tablet-like possibilities.

The tablet lacks a rear camera and comes with only a front-facing VGA camera. Now this is only good for video chatting. However, to ask for a rear camera is not justifiable at such a low price, at least for now.

HCL Infosystems Ltd. has unveiled its budget tablet: the HCL ME U1. The HCL ME U1 seems to be a trendy and stylish device, target especially to suit the needs of the Indian consumer and is based on the latest Android OS version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The HCL ME U1 tablet range starts from Rs. 7,999.

This HCL tablet does not come with in-built 3G support, which means that you cannot use this tablet as a phone. However, you can connect an external 3G dongle to get 3G connectivity.

The HCL ME U1 tablet also allows users exclusive access to the ME App store which boasts of over 10000 applications, securing the latest and the best android apps in the world for U1 users.

As if this is not enough, HCL is also bundling free multimedia and lifestyle goodies worth Rs. 3,000 from Hungama.com, Cleartrip.com and some others, with the tablet.

What’s the difference?

Aside from the significant price-difference of Rs. 1,500, there are few areas in which the two tablets come up with differences. The main differences are probably in terms of the Display and Battery.

The display size on both tablets is same but the Micromax Funbook comes with Multi-Touch Capacitive Screen whereas the HCL U1 comes with TFT Capacitive Screen.

The Funbook comes with 2800mAh whereas the U1 comes with a significantly more powerful battery at 3600mAh.

The Micromax Funbook delivers on many fronts for its price. So if you want a tablet for basic use and your budget is limited, go for the Funbook. However, if you want a better multimedia use and value for money, and don’t mind spending the extra buck, the U1 is your tablet.
