“The ASUS Zenfone Selfie outperforms the Apple iPhone 6 in the selfie test”

Following the successful run of the Zenfone 2 (review), ASUS launched multiple variants of the flagship smartphone. Each of them comes with its own unique feature. Among them is the Zenfone Selfie (first impressions), a device that boasts camera proficiency for both the back and front shooters. This device features a 13-megapixel PixelMaster front-facing shooter with an f/2.2 aperture, which is on par with the primary cameras on most handsets out there. And that’s not all, it also comes with a Real Tone LED flash in the front to lighten up all your selfies. Apart from its high-end optics, the phone packs in a 5.5-inch full HD display, a robust 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom chipset, 3 gigabytes of RAM and a capable 13MP rear camera. But for this article, let’s focus on the selfie proficiency of the Zenfone Selfie and for that, let’s pit it against one of the most popular camera phones out there – the Apple iPhone 6. Do note that the images from the Apple iPhone 6 are on the left, while those from the ASUS Zenfone Selfie are on the right.

For the first image let’s test the indoor shooting powers of the two devices. As is evident from the two pictures, images taken from ASUS Zenfone Selfie look much more natural and crisp. The higher megapixel count allows more room for zooming and cropping. Images from the iPhone 6 on the other hand, appear visibly grainy and lack detail.

Next, let’s check out the cameras in the sun. Though almost all cameras perform better in the sunlight due to the sheer amount of lighting present, the Zenfone Selfie performs slightly better than the iPhone 6 with more balanced colours. Plus, thanks to the 88-degree wide-angle lens, the Zenfone Selfie is capable of capturing more people in the same frame as compared to the iPhone 6.

Low-light Shot

Now let’s test the phones in the dark. The ASUS Zenfone Selfie features a front-facing dual-LED Real Tone flash, which is clearly a boon for low-light photography. You don’t need to turn your phone around and try to blindly capture photographs in the dark... instead you can see yourself (and your pout) as you click the images. Photos with flash (centre) look better lit and less distorted than the grainy image from the iPhone 6 (left).

But to keep things fair, let’s take a low light photograph without the flash (extreme right). The ASUS Zenfone Selfie hosts a low-light mode, which is absent on the iPhone 6. As we can clearly see, there’s a big difference in terms of detail and brightness. The ASUS Zenfone Selfie once again emerges with the more capable front camera.

While the Apple iPhone 6 undoubtedly has one of the best cameras in the industry, the ASUS Zenfone Selfie proves it has a clear advantage when it comes to the front camera. The 13MP snapper provides detailed, rich images across a variety of lighting situations. The presence of a dual-tone front-facing flash means that you can well illuminated images in darker environments without suffering from washed-out images. And if you don’t want to use the flash, the low-light mode is an excellent alternative too. If you like to take a lot of selfies but still want a power-packed device, the ASUS Zenfone Selfie is your best bet.
