BSNL is Ready for Number Portability

|September 12 2010 |Industry News, Mobile Operators

State owned mobile service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited(BSNL) has announced that it is ready for the rollout of , Mobile Number Portability or MNP and has the complete infrastructure to support it. The Department of Telecom has set 31 October 2010 as the final deadline for the implementation of MNP.

"We are ready with the infrastructure and will meet this deadline," said Gopal Das, officiating chairman and managing director of BSNL.

MNP allows users to switch operators while retaining the same mobile number.

Plagued by delays from the side of service providers, MNP has been delayed several times. While the initial deadline for the implementation of the service was 31 December 2009, it was extended further to 31 March 2010 and then later to 30 June. After operators asked for more time, the deadline was finally set to 31 October.

However, many believe that the present deadline might as well be extended as there are some issues that need to be resolved concerning the joint venture firm which had been allocated the task of implementing MNP.

Also, telecom operators are not too keen on MNP deployment as they are the ones who will lose subscribers.
