Giesecke & Devrient hints a Nano-SIM Card

|November 12 2011 |Industry News, inventions

Much before the mobile world back from the surprise of using micro SIM cards. Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) hints to get ready for another surprise. German based company G&D proudly presents the world's smallest SIM card possible called the Nano SIM. The Nano-SIM is a third smaller than the Micro-SIM which we use it for Apple iPhone and iPad. At this point of time, we may require a bit of clarification on what is the purpose of Nano-SIM and where do we use them ????

Nano SIM enables manufacturers to produce devices with a thinner chassis and better performance. Several bigger companies like Motorola, Nokia and Pantech may fall in the road-map. However, this takes few more years for adaption. Nano SIM measures approximately to 12mm x 9mm making 30 percent smaller than Micro-SIM cards. When compared to the regular SIM cards, the nano-SIM is almost 60 percent smaller. This miniature size really becomes an advantage to equipment manufacturers for additional memory or larger batteries.

“The invention of the SIM card remains a milestone in the history of G&D. With the nano-SIM, we have shown how this development can move closer to perfection,” says Axel Deininger, Head of G&D’s Secure Devices division.

Initial samples were made available by G&D to various mobile network operators for testing. The standardization of the nano-SIM is expected to be implemented through the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) by the end of the year.
