The joined team has come up with a technology dubbed real-time train running information system that helps any mobile user to access the location information of any train across any corner of India.

You just need to type the train number on your mobile phone and send SMS to dedicated number, either 09664139139 or 09415139139. Currently the service is only made available for 36 pairs of premier trains that includes Shatabdi, Rajdhani and as well as non-stop Duranto.

According to railway officials, in next 18 months the facility would be extended to more major trains. Indian Railways has allocated Rs 121 crore for the project. Permission has also been obtained from ISRO to operate the train location tracking system through satellite.

Officials said, "It will cost about Rs 50,000 to install a receiver on the locomotive for making the system operational. There will be a centre at New Delhi for receiving data from across the country."

Apart from the mobile phones, the facility would also be made available to be accessed through other mode of interactive devices like laptops.

Indian Railways is also working for facilitating broadband-based Internet and multimedia services at stations along with high quality train information displays and information boards.
