Jobs vs Hefner: Playboy coming to iPad in March

|January 21 2011 |Mobile Apps, Apple iPhone, Apple iPad

At the risk of offending some of our conservative readers, I am going to talk about a tabloid stuff today. Couple of days ago, Hugh Hefner founder of playboy adult magazine, announced that (through a tweet) the full catalog of playboy magazine since 1953 will be coming to iPad this march 2011. This catalogue will contain uncensored playboy content including photo spreads and centerfolds!

Hefner said "Big news! Playboy -- both old & new -- will be available on iPad beginning in March. The iPad version of Playboy will include the whole magazine from the first issue to the latest." This mens magazine might be produced by digital magazine publisher called Bondi Digital who have confirmed the news.

You might wonder, "what's the big deal". If your tablet or iphone has internet connection, you might very well open the playboy website and access the content through paid subscription. Right? Users are not seeing it that way..The kind of experience that a native iPad offers simply cannot be compared with the experience of accessing browser-based content in iPad. Now you see the thin line :)

This is a very intriguing news item for couple of reasons. First and foremost is that Apple and Steve jobs are on war against porn on apple devices such as iPad and iPhone. Apple's appstore policy is very stringent and literally bans any app that offers content on pornography, gambling, drugs or file-sharing. Till date, there has been no apps in apple store that offer nudity-based content. Steve has been very straight-forward with some angry customers and journalists and below are some of the comments that Steve made..

" (W)e do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone...You know, there's a porn store for Android....You can download nothing but porn. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That's a place we don't want to go - so we're not going to go there".

""Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom. The times they are a changin', and some traditional PC folks feel like their world is slipping away."

"We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone."

For all the efforts that he is making, Steve cannot control which websites the iPad and iPhones users open. (I am sure it can be interfered, but there is no policy on that yet).

So, what plans do Hefner have? Looks like he is going to work with Bondi Digital, who have rolled out a web app that can tap into the native features of iPad such as pinch, zoom, flip etc., So Hefner is planning to offer this playboy catalogue through a paid subscription via this digital magazine app! Bondi is also upgrading their technology from Microsoft silverlight platform to HTML 5 which is supported by iPad. As on today, there is a playboy app but they claim to be nudity-free!

I can appreciate the intentions of Steve to keep the iPad and iPhone apps family-safe and work-safe. But some angry customers have a point that they are paying for the content and someone is ready to supply the content, then why interfere? Well, this discussion again falls into the turf of open-world vs closed-world, and I would safely step-aside!
