McAfee Application control to fight Android malware

|March 26 2013 |Mobile Apps, applications

McAfee has launched a first of its kind security solution for Android-based devices. The McAfee Application Control for Android is presently the one and only security solution that will be integrated in the Android kernel and embedded in the operating system.

This security solution will provide protection from installation or execution of malware on Android devices. Android is currently the most popular smartphone OS in the world, but has been facing bad malware issues due to viral apps and pirated apps that severely harm the system.

The Vice President, Product Management of McAfee Rishi Bhargava, says that McAfee is the only security technology provider that gives security by residing in the Android kernel space. As Android kernel adopts on core Linux platform, it was natural for the company to extend its whitelisting solution capabilities to Android.

The McAfee Embedded Control solution provides tamper-proof protection, great control of devices and easy management. Prior to McAfee Application Control, security applications only operated at the user level in Android. This left devices really susceptible to system-level security breaches. The new control from McAfee removes this security gap with a kernel-residing security solution. This really boosts up the security for the entire Android system. The embedded control also blocks illegal apps and changes on point-of-service infrastructures like retail devices, office equipment, gaming devices, medical devices, industrial control systems, automotive, and different military and aerospace devices.

The Associate Senior Vice President at NEC Infrontia Corporation, Hiroshi Komura, while commenting on the potential use of Android-based software in payment terminals, medical equipment and other areas where it could not be used earlier due to security problems, said that this is a big step, considering that there was already growing interest in Android in embedded systems. McAfee has done a great job by extending its security to Android which will only enhance the operating system for new product designs and help it flourish further.
