|December 13 2012 |Industry News

To enhance the smartphone experience in the affordable smartphone category, MediaTek announced the MT6589, its first quad-core system on a chip (SOC). This is expected to be a major step in its endeavor to provide developed and innovative features. It integrates wireless modems that are HSPA+ enabled along with various international standard features through A7 processor developed by ARM. This move of MediaTek gives a tough competition to its closest competitors like Samsung, HTC and the semiconductor supplier Qualcomm.

Its prime feature being the fact that it provides enhanced multimedia features but unlike most of the smartphone chips, it consumes much less power. It supports a 13MP camera. It supports dual SIM. It has a 4 core 1.2 GHz CA7 Apps CPU. It provides video quality of 1080p@30fps. MT6589 is delivered in 28nm process technology. MediaTek has integrated Modem of Rel.8 that supports a speed of 42Mbps in its SOC.

Laurence Bryant, director of mobile solutions, ARM said, “The ARM Cortex™-A7 is the most power-efficient applications processor ever developed by ARM. We are pleased MediaTek is the first company to combine a quad-core Cortex-A7 and leading edge 28nm manufacturing with TrustZone® for system-level security. The MT6589 system-on-chip brings the performance and features associated with high-end mobile devices to mass-market smartphones and tablets,”

MT6589 ensures high quality graphics through its Series5XT GPU from Imagination Technologies. “Today’s smart device users have very high expectations for graphic quality and performance. The MT6589 gives Imagination a great opportunity to show the abilities of the PowerVR™ Series5XT GPU, which delivers around twice the performance of previous generation devices while maintaining the lowest possible power and silicon area. We are delighted to contribute to this impressive, highly integrated solution, which demonstrates the benefits of our ongoing close strategic relationship with MediaTek.” said Tony Smith, Vice President of marketing at Imagination Technologies.

Emphasising upon the need of MT6589, Dr. Ji-Yang Wang,COO of TCl/Alcatel said, “The demand for a Smartphone SoC that can be delivered anywhere in the world has never been greater, which is why the MT6589 is so important to our business. As the first truly universal platform it is designed with the customer in mind to give us a crucial competitive edge. The MT6589 will make the life of our customers and partners easier, allowing them to bring the best possible experience to mid-to high-end users in multiple markets in the most timely and affordable manner, and most importantly, without compromising its performance.”

Samsung and HTC are already using quad chips. MediaTek is working upon designing MT6589 in Android OS and is expected to be available from the first quarter of 2013.
