MediaTek keen on Low cost Android and 3G handset market

|January 28 2011 |Industry News

Mediatek is the leading fabless semiconductor company which designs and sells System on Chip solutions for various wireless and electronic devices. Mediatek is the darling of Indian handset brands such as Micromax, Intex, Karbonn and many others. MediaTek not only provides ready-to-use and easy-to-assemble chipsets for mobile handsets, they also provide system software to power these handsets. This combination makes it easy for any newcomer to launch their own brand of mobile phone in a span of weeks!

MediaTek is a big player in China and are a major force to reckon with in India too. But so far MediaTek has enabled the mass availability of feature phones and basic phones. India now has a tele-density of 64% and the demand for mobile phone is also growing very fast. What's interesting is that the demand has shifted from basic phones to slightly advanced feature phones and smartphones with 3G capability and android-friendly. MediaTek wants to establish its presence in that segment too.

MediaTek has publicly expressed its interest to work with local Indian handset manufacturers to come up with 3G-enabled smartphones and android-powered handsets at affordable rates and good quality.

“India is a high potential market for our company. The consumers in semi urban and rural areas, who have been the traditional users of low cost handsets, now demand high end features at affordable rates. MediaTek has a proven track record worldwide and aims to leverage this to become the preferred chipset provider to indigenous Indian handset makers, thereby bringing high end applications within the reach of the Indian masses. We are planning to step up our marketing initiatives in India to create awareness about our products and enhance our brand value in the Indian market”, adds Mr. Arun Gupta, Business Development Director MediaTek India.

“MediaTek’s success worldwide in wireless communications has been because of an end-to-end offering that simultaneously provides hardware platforms, reference designs, software features and professional support to customers in a perfect combination of excellence in cost and performance. We do believe that our latest single chipset solution- MT6253, and a customized Android platform for the India market that features many extremely popular applications will help sustain our leadership in the Indian market and the introduction of some of our new 3G solutions will help penetrate new segments”, says Mr. Grant Kuo,MD MediaTek India.

So, we can expect the next wave of smartphones and feature phones from Indian players at very affordable prices. Good news for Indian consumers. Bad news for Multinational brands?
