February roundup: top smartphone launches

While most of the action in February was overshadowed by the impending Mobile World Congress, there were still a bunch of significant devices that made their way to the market. Lenovo’s iPhone 6 lookalike, a pair of new budget Lumias and the metal Samsung Galaxy A7 were the highlights of the month, besides a smattering of other budget devices. Here’s our roundup of the top smartphones that went on sale in February. 

Lenovo Sisley S90

Lenovo’s iPhone 6 clone, the Sisley S90 which was launched in China last year, made its way to the Indian market last month. The Apple-inspired smartphone features a 5-inch HD display, 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of memory, 13MP/8MP cameras and a 2,300mAh battery. The device runs Android KitKat with an update to Lollipop in the pipeline. It measures 6.9mm in thickness and boasts 4G connectivity.

Microsoft Lumia 435 and Lumia 532

Microsoft unveiled two budget devices last month, the Lumia 435 and Lumia 532. Both smartphones feature 4-inch 800 x 480 pixel displays, 1GB of RAM, 1,560mAh batteries, VGA front cameras and 8GB of internal expandable memory. While the Lumia 435 gets a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor and a 2MP primary camera, the Lumia 532 is equipped with a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset and a 5MP primary snapper. Both devices come in dual-SIM configurations and are bundled with 30GB of free OneDrive storage. They run Windows Phone 8.1 with the Lumia Denim update.

Samsung Galaxy J1

The Samsung Galaxy J1 is a budget Android smartphone that was launched exclusively on Amazon. The device features a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core SoC mated to 512MB of RAM. There’s a limited 4GB of internal storage available, that’s expandable via microSD up to 64GB. Camera options include a 5MP rear snapper with LED flash, and a 2MP shooter in the front. The dual-SIM device is backed by an 1,850mAh battery, and runs Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz. Samsung later introduced a 4G variant of the Galaxy J1 which packs in a quad-core processor and 768MB of RAM.

ASUS ZenFone C

After being launched in Malaysia, the ASUS ZenFone C made its way to Indian shores last month. The budget smartphone features a 4.5-inch 854 x 480 pixel display, and is backed by a 1.2GHz Intel CloverTrail Z2520 processor, aided by 1GB of RAM. There’s 8GB of internal storage expandable up to 64GB via microSD. The 5MP rear camera is one of its highlights, packing in ASUS’ PixelMaster tech, which enables it to take better images in low light. There’s also a VGA front camera on board. The ZenFone C runs Android KitKat with ZenUI, and is fuelled by a 2,100mAh battery. It is a dual-SIM device and is available in red, black and white hues.

Samsung Galaxy A7

Taking its A-series of metal-clad smartphones forward, Samsung announced the Galaxy A7 last month. With its 6.3mm frame, the Galaxy A7 is also Samsung’s slimmest smartphone till date. On the specs front, it features a 5.5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal expandable memory. It gets a 13MP primary camera with LED flash, and a 5MP front shooter. The device runs Android KitKat with TouchWiz, and is backed by a 2,600mAh battery. On the connectivity front, it offers dual-SIM and support for both of India’s LTE bands.

Salora Arya Z3

The successor to last year’s Arya Z2, the Salora Arya Z3 was launched exclusively on Amazon last month. The smartphone features a 5-inch HD display and runs Android 4.4 KitKat. It is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor, paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal expandable storage. Its other features include 8MP/2MP cameras, a 2,200mAh battery and dual-SIM.

Other worthy devices that made their way to the market include the Xiaomi Mi 4 64GB, Samsung Galaxy Grand Max, ASUS Fonepad 7 (FE171CG) and the Google Nexus 9 LTE.
