"Rounding up all the rumours about the upcoming flagship killer - the OnePlus 3"

OnePlus 3 Featured

Earlier this year, OnePlus' co-founder, Carl Pei said that the brand’s next flagship, the OnePlus 3, would be unveiled this quarter. With leaks and teasers pouring in from all sides, the launch seems to be inevitable in the coming weeks. Have a look at (and don't forget to bookmark) this post containing all the leaks and rumours regarding the flagship killer which we would be constantly updating to accommodate newer leaks as they arrive.

Design

OnePlus 3 press render

The latest press render shared by popular leakster Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, shows the OnePlus 3 as an all-metal bodied device, which is consistent with previous live image leaks, unlike the predecessor OnePlus 2 (review) which had a metal reinforced build. The design seems to be heavily inspired from HTC's One A9 (first impressions) with slight curves around the edges for an ergonomic design. On the left edge, you will find the volume rocker and the alert slider carried forward from the OnePlus 2, which is a physical toggle switch to prioritise notification alerts. To the right you will find the power button. The fingerprint sensor seems to be integrated with the home key itself and one can spot the USB Type-C port at the bottom of the device. According to the leak, the camera seems to protrude a bit from the smartphone which might be an issue for some users.

There are multiple images of the retail boxes, which could either indicate all the options OnePlus is considering for the final packaging, or different retail boxes for different markets.

Display

The smartphone is expected to carry a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display which is not an upgrade as compared to the OnePlus 2 but will help justify its mid-range price point. Given the nature of AMOLED displays, users can expect deeper blacks and slightly better battery performance than the predecessor. It remains to be seen whether the display is protected by some third-party coating or not.

Processor and Memory

OnePlus has good reason to call the OnePlus 3 the flagship killer for it is expected to reign supreme with @evleaks confirming the presence of the latest-and-greatest SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 820, which is a 64-bit quad-core chip that offers high performance and better battery efficiency and also supports the Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

Reportedly, the phone is going to launch in several variants and the beefed up version possesses a whopping 6GB of RAM along with 64GB of onboard storage. One may also expect variants with 4GB RAM and 32GB / 64GB of onboard storage.

Battery

The smartphone will draw juice from a 3,000mAh battery for its operational needs and we see clear indications that OnePlus has been working on a fast charging technology. The company had filed a trademark for the name ‘Dash Charge’, which is speculated to be another name for fast charging. The trademark papers were filed with the US patent office on April 16th. If Dash Charge is similar to Oppo's VOOC charging technology, it would be able to charge the 3,000mAh battery really, really fast.

Software

A screenshot leak by @evleaks again suggests that users will find Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box and that the company is already working on the preview builds of Android N to roll it out to the device after the formal launch of the new flavour of Android. As usual, you will find OxygenOS custom UI overlaying the stock android experience. The smartphone is also slated to boast NFC connectivity, a feature that its predecessor skipped.

Cameras

Multiple sources claim that the OnePlus 3 will offer a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing snapper. It is also expected to possess optical image stabilisation (OIS) and laser autoFocus technology. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has posted a picture that was possibly taken from the OnePlus 3's camera.

Launch event

According to a report by Android Authority, the OnePlus 3 flagship will be unveiled on June 14th. Talking to a OnePlus representative, one of the readers of the website was informed that the phone will be unveiled on the said date. OnePlus has already announced that it will be unveiling the OnePlus 3 flagship via VR using the Loop virtual reality headset, which is up for grabs on Amazon India for Re 1 (plus shipping) on June 4th and 7th. The company has partnered with AntVR (the same brand Lenovo partnered with for its TheaterMax-enabled smartphones) to produce the Loop VR headset.

The OnePlus 3 will be unveiled inside a virtual space station called The Loop. The brand claims that the OnePlus 3’s launch will be the world’s first global shopping experience in virtual reality. VR visitors to The Loop will be able to order the OnePlus 3 before anyone else.

Availability and pricing

As for pricing, the latest intel hints at the premium OnePlus 3 (6GB RAM and 64GB storage) variant will cost about Rs 26,400 ($400) while the 4GB RAM and 32GB storage model will cost around Rs 20,500 ($310). If OnePlus does push for such aggressive pricing, it would certainly provide strong competition to the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the LeEco Le Max 2 which carry the same SoC in this range. The devices should be available starting late June-early July if the device is launched on June 14th.

With no source to confirm, all these rumours should be taken with a pinch of salt. We’ll have more details once the device goes official. Don't forget to bookmark this page for we would be constantly updating the same with new leaks and news pertaining to the OnePlus 3.
