"Plantronics ups the ante in the Bluetooth headset segment with its stylish Voyager Edge and the fitness-focussed BackBeat FIT"
A Bluetooth headset is a Bluetooth headset, right? They are a dime a dozen, especially in the entry-level space. The premium segment is a different ballgame however, and that's exactly where Plantronics plays. The brand has just unveiled two new products in India, and each of them addresses a different audience.
The first, tagged the Voyager Edge, is a mono Bluetooth headset that blends style with a long list of features. It includes a futuristic-looking charging case which, apart from topping up the headset's battery on-the-go, also includes touch-sensitive controls for displaying battery status for both its own internal battery as well as the headset's. There's NFC for easy pairing, and the headset communicates over Bluetooth 4.0. Thanks to three built-in microphones, the Voyager Edge touts effective noise-cancellation.
There's 'Smart Sensor' tech that detects whether you're wearing the headset or not, directing calls to either the headset or the paired phone, pausing music playback, or even answering incoming calls automatically. Voice-based alerts and commands are included too. The headset comes in white or black, and can also be used with a companion app for Android and iOS. The headset weighs a mere 9 grams, and promises six hours of talk time, with the charging case adding another 10 hours.
The BackBeat FIT, on the other hand, is a wireless stereo headset targeted towards fitness-focussed individuals – handling both music and calls. It's designed to address some common issues faced by fitness buffs, and features a flexible headband and in-ear stabilisers to ensure a snug fit. There's a sweat- and weather-proof nano coating so you can use it outdoors. Large controls placed on either side let you handle calls and control music. Available in Electric Blue or Lime Burst shades, it also boasts a reflective coating (if you want to go for a run after dark), and a special eartip design so you're more aware of your surroundings.
The included armband case also comes in matching colours, can accommodate your smartphone, and also reverses to double up as storage for the headset itself. Plantronics is promising eight hours of continuous music playback, plus a whopping six months of standby time courtesy its DeepSleep hibernation mode. Pristine audio quality is promised too, of course. The BackBeat FIT's firmware can be updated over-the-air, via a companion app available for Android and iOS platforms.
Both the Voyager Edge and the BackBeat FIT have been identically priced at Rs 7,490 each. While the Voyager Edge will be available to buy starting tomorrow (exclusively on Amazon India for a couple of weeks), the BackBeat FIT will only be available starting early July.
