The new Snapdragon 805 processor brings the Ultra HD video support to mobile devices

Qualcomm, famous for its Snapdragon mobile processors has announced a successor to its Snapdragon 800 System-on-Chip. Dubbed as Snapdragon 805, the processor is already available to manufacturers for testing purposes, however, it will be seen on smartphones and tablets next year only.

Qualcomm Processor

The Snapdragon 805 is a combination of Krait 450 quad-core CPU and Adreno 420 GPU along with a new communication chip. The Krait 450 quad-core processor has a clock speed of 2.5 GHz, and memory bandwidth support of 25.6 GBPS. In comparison, the Krait 400 processor in Snapdragon 800 had 2.26 GHz speed and exactly half the memory bandwidth at 12.6 GBPS. It provides flawless multimedia and web browsing experience.

The Adreno 420 Graphics Processor offers up to 40 percent more graphics processing against its predecessor Adreno 330. Qualcomm is promoting it as “truly end-to-end Ultra HD solution” since the GPU supports not only 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels resolution) display, but also output to compatible 4K TV. It also brings support for hardware tessellation and geometry shaders for 4K rendering. This would also enhance the gaming experience of the device. For low power HD video playback, it features Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) format which does the video post processing as well as video enhancements .

For communication, it comes with either Qualcomm Gobi MDM9x25 or Gobi MDM9x35 4th generation modem, which support 40 MHz LTE connectivity for both TDD and FDD modes. The modem also supports wireless streaming of 4K video content. It allows faster Wi-Fi performance on devices, extended operating range and simultaneous Bluetooth connections, without impacting the battery life much.

It also offers world’s first ISP (Image signal Processor) with 1 Giga-pixel/s speed and throughput resulting in sharper and high resolution pictures. Furthermore, it adds post-processing features improving low light photos.

Rumors indicate that the first smartphone to run on Snapdragon 8974AC processor based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chip would be Gionee Elife E7.
