RIM to launch free voice calls over WiFi on BlackBerry smartphones

Struggling mobile maker Research in Motion (RIM) has come up with unique and exclusive offer to its BlackBerry handset customers to regain the lost territory in mobile market.

Now it will be possible for BlackBerry owners to make free voice calls. Yes, it can be made free via Wi-Fi network by using the BBM messaging service.

RIM proclaimed on Wednesday that it has added the feature to BBM. The users now will be able to switch over from a text chat to a voice call and vice versa. On the other hand, a split screen option is already there to let users talk and text simultaneously.

This new feature is a free update from the Canadian telecommunication and wireless equipment company and it arrives before the launching of its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones in the global market.

RIM announced that its subscribers have doubled. Thanks to the emerging markets and the popular BBM service of it. However, it is still in a crawling phase in North America.

In a recent press statement RIM said the BBM voice feature is attracting developing markets.

In spite of RIM struggling in North America, the BlackBerry is still the match winner in markets of South Africa, Nigeria and Indonesia.

RIM remarked that the BBM voice update is now available for BlackBerry smartphones running the BlackBerry 6 operating system. RIM's current phones run the BB 7 OS. After Jan 30 users will be introduced to BlackBerry 10.
