Research In Motion introduced a new Operating System for tablets and smartphones which combines the BlackBerry OS and QNX systems. The new platform was announced by RIM President and Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis during the BlackBerry DevCon (Developer Conference) Americas 2011 held at San Francisco.
"With nearly 5 million BlackBerry apps downloaded daily, our customers have made BlackBerry one of the most profitable platforms for developers," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM. "At DevCon today, we're giving developers the tools they need to build richer applications and we’re providing direction on how to best develop their smartphone and tablet apps as the BlackBerry and QNX platforms converge into our next generation BBX platform."
The new BBX platform integrated with BBX-OS and will support BlackBerry cloud services. This allows to explore a large number of open development libraries and suits the development environments for both HTML5 and native developers. The OS comes with BlackBerry Cascades UI framework for advanced graphics. The Super App capabilities enable many advanced features including deep integration between apps, always-on Push services, the BBM™ Social Platform, and etc.
