Alright, now that Google has officially announced and released the Android 4.0 – codenamed Ice-cream Sandwich, all the smartphone owners of international brands would be eagerly awaiting to know whether and when their device can sport the latest operating system. It’s a no brainer that the future handsets would be powered by the new operating system. But, what about the existing smartphones? Google from its side confirmed that all the handsets that sports Gingerbread are ‘theoretically’ eligible for Android 4.0 update. It then depends on the manufacturer. Sony Ericsson and HTC were the first brands to announce their plans around Android 4.0.
Sony Ericsson says that all the Xperia line of handsets that were released in the year 2011 would be receiving the Android 4.0 updates. The handsets include Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Neo V, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc and Xperia Arc S. Sony also said that the current handsets should first receive the updates for 2.3.4 version of gingerbread. Somewhere in the year 2012, Sony would be releasing the Android 4.0 updates for the handsets mentioned above. Here’s the official statement issued by Sony with respect to Android 4.0 update.
Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.
HTC lived up to its expectation of delivering vague messages. They are also infamously known for delaying OS upgrades citing reasons of UI Customization, lack of hardware etc., HTC said that they are currently evaluating the features and functionality of Android 4.0 and working out the upgrade plans. As of now, there is no clarity on which handsets will be eligible to receive updates and when will the updates start appearing.
