|November 16 2011 |Android Phones, Industry News, Mobile OS, Software update, Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson Xperia owners have some good news to rejoice. The company confirmed that Xperia range of handsets will get an Android Ice Cream Sandwich update. In an official statement, the company stated that, “We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. We are working on merging our current Xperia experience with the new features in Android 4.0."

However, there is an undefined catch with the given statement. The update is applicable for Sony Ericsson Xperia handsets released in the year 2011. This hits hard for other owners of Xperia handset like Xperia X10. Here are a few eligible devices identified

The above mentioned device list is just a tentative and not the final one. Sony Ericsson no where posted any specific date or period for the update release. We hope it would begin in the first quarter of 2012. The last Android update from the OEM was Android v2.3 Gingerbread. The minor release version is Android OS v2.3.5 with few bug fixes. This week Google released the source code of Android Ice Cream Sandwich for developers.
