"The Sony SmartBand SWR10 claims to be a step ahead of conventional fitness trackers"

Sony unveiled the SmartBand SWR10 wearable activity tracker today, a little over a month after announcing its SmartWear technology at CES 2014. The wearable comes in the guise of a wristband, available in a variety of colours. It is both lightweight and waterproof, and is intended for 24/7 use.

The SmartBand is a step ahead of conventional fitness trackers. Apart from tracking your activity, exercise and sleeping patterns, it records information like places visted, music listened to, games played, photos taken, etc. It also features a Life Bookmark key, which you can press to record all information during a special moment.

The SmartBand doesn’t have a watch face or display, and instead relays information via Sony’s Lifelog app for Android. The app displays all this data in a visual interface, and lets you create goals and monitor progress. It even provides recommendations based on your activity, such as choosing an optimal time to wake you up depending on your sleep cycle.

The SmartBand pairs with an Android phone via Bluetooth or NFC, and will vibrate when you get a notification such as a call or text. It also vibrates when you’re more than 10 metres away from your smartphone, alerting you that you’re out of range. The wristband can even be used to control music playback wirelessly from your phone.

At the heart of the SmartBand is Sony’s removable Core unit, which can be carried separately in your pocket or handbag. Alternatively, you can use the core with interchangeable wristbands. The Sony SmartBand SWR10 and Lifelog Android app will be launched globally in March this year.
