Sony SmartWatch 2 officially announced, a decent competitor to Samsung Galaxy Gear

Sony has launched the second version of its Smartwatch wearable accessory in Berlin and it is going to give stiff competition to the Galaxy Gear watch introduced by the South Korean tech giant. The Sony SmartWatch 2 is a modest upgrade from the original device and you will notice a lot of changes in the features of the watch if you have already used its previous version. It doesn’t actually look entirely similar to its predecessor because it is much slimmer and comes with bigger display.

Features wise, Sony SmartWatch 2 comes with a 1.6inch display screen with the resolution of 220*176 pixels which is lower than the 320 pixels square resolution screen in Samsung Galaxy Gear. It doesn’t come with any camera to capture photos, while Samsung is offering 1.9MP camera with decent quality photos in its smartwatch. Its body is designed with aluminum materials and it supports microUSB charging.

It will be compatible with most of the Android smartphones with its NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity features. It beats Samsung in providing better battery back of 3-4 days under normal use compared to only 1 day battery life of Samsung Galaxy Gear. However, there is no microphone and speaker in this watch.

It beats Samsung’s watch (IP55 certification) in the water and dust resistant category with its IP57 certification which allows you to use it under 1 meter water depth for thirty minutes. Sony has priced the SmartWatch 2 for $266 and it will be available to buy in the global market with multiple colors wrist choices by the end of September 2013.
