Sony Mobile Communications (India) announced of phasing out its feature phones from the Indian market by September end. Company officially said the smartphone segment in the country is growing by about 70 percent and hence the company wants to focus solely on the smartphone segment.
Managing director of Sony, P. Balaji, told to reporters on Wednesday phasing out of the features phones from the Indian market was decided few quarters earlier and now it is going to be implemented.
Currently there are six to seven features phone of Sony in the Indian market, said Balaji.
Sony Ericsson, the cellular arm of Sony, is now wholly-owned subsidiary of the company against earlier being just a joint venture. Sony Ericsson after the end of JV launched range of Xperia brand smartphones and it is learned these phones would stay in the market.
According to Balaji, smartphones in Indian market contributes just 10 percent of total sales, but value wise it is about 45 percent. This is the reason Sony wants to tab the smartphone segment here.
Sony India imports products for Indian market from Mexico, China and Japan manufacturing units. Answering to question Balaji ruled out of building up any set up in India for the production of smartphones.
On the occasion Sony also unveiled three new models of smartphones.
