Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual unboxing and first impressions: an XL-sized phablet

"We go hands-on with Sony's latest phablet."

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra11

The Xperia T2 Ultra Dual is Sony’s new mid-range phablet. While some Sony smartphones such as the upcoming Xperia Z2 sport large 5.2-inch displays, the Xperia T2 Ultra joins the ranks of 6-inch mammoths, such as the Nokia Lumia 1320. The Triluminos display offers 720p resolution and Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 for enhanced contrast, sharpness and colour reproduction.

The Xperia T2 Ultra flaunts Sony’s trademark Xperia design in a smooth plastic finish. However, being a mid-range device, it misses out on the water- and dust-proof capabilities of Sony flagships.

The dual-SIM phone is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor ticking along at 1.4GHz, coupled with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 305 graphics. Other specs include a 13MP rear camera, a 1.1MP front shooter, 8GB of expandable storage and a 3,000mAh battery. The phablet is available in white, black and purple. It is also available in a single SIM variant.

For a quick look at the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual, here’s an unboxing and our first impressions.

The Xperia T2 Ultra comes in an attractive flat retail box. Inside, you’ll find the Sony headset, a two-pin wall charger, a micro-USB to USB charging and data cable, a start-up guide and warranty info.

The phone itself is quite striking, with all the focus on its six inches of pixels. To cut down on size, Sony has made the bezels very narrow on the sides, although there’s a full inch of extra space on the top and bottom. The T2 Ultra is made of shiny plastic, with a chrome trim around the sides and chrome accents for major buttons and ports. Despite its large size, the T2 Ultra is quite light at 172 grams and not too bulky at 7.65mm in thickness. The plastic construction exudes a nice, premium finish, but it does tend to pick up smudges.

Above the display is a Sony logo, flanked by an LED notification light, the front 1.1MP camera and proximity/light sensor on the left. Above the logo is a slim cut-out for the speaker, encased behind a metallic grill. At the bottom, the fascia is bare except for a microphone, which is identical to the earpiece on top. The Xperia T2 Ultra forgoes the Android hardware buttons, replacing them with onscreen controls instead.

At the back, you’ll find a large circular 13MP camera sensor on the top left, with an LED flash below it. There’s a secondary microphone on the right. Below the camera is a small silver NFC tag which can be used to connect to other Sony accessories and devices. At the bottom is a wide loudspeaker with a metallic grill, and Xperia branding on top.

The glassy chrome strips on the top and bottom are devoid of any ports, and the sides are where all the action happens. The power button sits in the centre on the right side, and although it might seem like an odd placement, it works for the T2 Ultra. A power button placed on the top would have been difficult to access owing to its size. Below the power button is a volume rocker/zoom toggle and a dedicated camera key. Above the power button is a pull-out flap which conceals the dual micro-SIM card slots. A 3.5mm headphone jack sits above it. On the top left you’ll find a micro-USB port for charging and data transfers, and a microSD card slot which is also hidden behind a flap.

The Xperia T2 Ultra runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, with a KitKat update reportedly being prepped. The operating system layered with Sony’s Timescape UI, bringing a plethora of Sony apps and customisations to the regular Android interface.

At a launch price of Rs 25,990, the Xperia T2 Ultra Dual is competitively-priced phablet. We'll have more details on its performance in our full review, coming up shortly.
