"Along with the Sony Xperia Z2, buyers will also get a SmartBand and a flip cover free as part of the inaugural offer"
Nothing excites us mobile fanatics more than a loaded smartphone flagship, and today, we have one more reason to rejoice. Sony's just announced the entry of its latest and greatest, the Xperia Z2, into the country. Unveiled to the world at MWC, the new device has been priced at Rs 49,990 and will be available to buy starting this month.
Encased in glass and metal, and toting Sony's signature OmniBalance design, the Xperia Z2 boasts some mouth-watering specs, as is apt for a true flagship. Its window to the world is a 5.2-inch full HD display, and horsepower is provided by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.3GHz. It's been mated with a chart-topping 3GB of RAM and Adreno 330 graphics. 16GB of storage is provided, and you can add another 128GB via microSD. USB OTG is available, and the other connectivity options available are wide and varied too... including dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC, DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct. The 20.7-megapixel primary snapper that features a Sony G lens and a 1/2.3-inch sensor is one of the main highlights, though we did see a similarly-specced shooter on its predecessor, the Xperia Z1 too. Incorporating a plethora of special modes, the Z2's primary shooter also lets you shoot videos in 4K resolution, or at high frame rates for slow-mo effects, along with the now obligatory Background defocus mode along for the ride. A 2MP shooter handles video calling and selfie duties at front.
A loaded-up-to-the-gills spec sheet aside, the Xperia Z2 sports quite a few special features, the most notable (yet expected) one of which is its waterproof capabilities, following in the footsteps of the previous premium Xperia lineup. Running Android 4.4.2 Kitkat layered with Sony's proprietary skin, the Z2 also has quite a few other tricks up its sleeve – the double-tap-to-wake-up functionality and a built-in answering machine feature for instance.
Sony has also launched its life-logging accessory, the SmartBand in India. The band pairs any smartphone running Android KitKat via Bluetooth or NFC and provides vibration alerts for calls and messages along with automatically logging all your activities on the companion app. The Sony SmartBand is priced at Rs 5,99o, but is bundled for free with the Xperia Z2 under the inaugural offer. A premium flip cover worth Rs 2,999 is also provided with the device for a limited time. The Japanese brand is also offering premium content to consumers to download including Michael Jackson's Xscape album and six Hollywood movies.
The Sony Xperia Z2 will be competing against the likes of the venerable Samsung Galaxy S5 and the uber-stylish HTC One (M8), in what promises to be a very exciting battle. Need ringside seats, anyone? Just keep watching this space.
