“Here are the top devices which users searched for in the month of August”
Gone are the days when Indian consumers were loyal to one brand, now they've become extremely fickle and in a way, smarter. This is evident if you've been following our top 20 mobile phones lists shared every month. While only a few brands featured in these lists at the start, now we're seeing as much as 10 brands finding a place. This month is no different, especially since the likes of Xiaomi have upped consumers' expectations by offering performance-oriented devices on a budget. Let's see what the users of 91mobiles searched for in the month of August. It must be noted though, that the list is on the basis of popularity of devices, but may not reflect their actual purchase by the users.
Since the time we started our top 20 series, the Nokia XL is the longest-sitting device on the first position for seven long months. Finally, it has been brought down by none other than the Xiaomi Mi 3 (review | cheatsheet). What’s more intriguing is the fact the Mi 3 is being followed by its successor, the Mi 4, even though it’s yet to land in India. The Nokia XL sits on the third position, while the Micromax Unite 2 (review | FAQs) has dropped in its popularity by one rank. ASUS' debut in the smartphones category can also be deemed successful considering its mid-ranger Zenfone 5 (review) is soaring in popularity and is now holding the fifth spot.
Just like the table toppers, the changes have happened in the overall list as well, with more than half the number of devices slipping in their popularity. A very few managed to maintain their positions or better it. Have a gander at the top 20 list in the month of August mentioning the device name, its current rank, changes in its rank along with its OS, price band and launch month. If the smartphone is yet to launch in India, then we have given its price range based on its pricing elsewhere and rumours.
There are a few new faces among the top 20 devices, let’s take a look at them and also see which ones took a beating.
The Chinese upstart’s debut smartphone, the Mi 3 has done quite well in India considering it went out of stock within a matter of a few seconds each time (barring the first lot) it went on sale. Now that the brand has decided to pause its sales temporarily (sigh!), consumers are setting their eyes on the Mi 4 (Mi 4 vs Mi 3: spec showdown). While there’s no clear timeline as to when the Xiaomi Mi 4 (review | unboxing) will arrive in India, it offers best-in-class internals considering the expected price point of below Rs 25,000.
The Apple of China is surely enjoying all the attention in the Indian market. After the Mi 3, the Redmi 1s (review | FAQs) is the second smartphone from the brand launched here and is priced enticingly at Rs 5,999. The device follows Xiaomi’s philosophy of offering specs worth double its asking price, as compared to others.
Lenovo’s mid-range offering, the S850 has also debuted in the top 20 list thanks to brand’s promotional campaigns on TV. While the smartphone features average specs such as a quad-core processor running at 1.3GHz mated with a gigabyte of RAM, it sets itself apart with its all-glass design and powerful pair of 13- and 5-megapixel cameras at the rear and front respectively.
For a change, only three devices exited the list in August.
Since the last few months, we’re seeing a huge shift in the market, i.e, the top players are losing their grips on the market to new brands. The month of August witnessed the most number of brands in our series yet – 14. Yes, 14 brands had their share among the top 20 phones. Talking about the most popular brands this time, Samsung, Nokia and Xiaomi ruled the chart with three devices each, while the other 11 made it to the list with one offering each.
There’s no sign of the popularity of the affordable segment between Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 waning anytime soon. This time, there were 13 devices falling in this price bracket with only five handsets in the mid-range segment of Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000. The biggest loser is the super-premium category of Rs 35,000 and above, with only two devices among the top 20.
Well, the coming time will become more interesting as the Android One smartphones are set to launch soon, and entry-level smartphones are getting a new meaning with the Firefox OS (Intex Cloud FX first impressions | Spice Fire One Mi – FX1 first impressions). Many more manufacturers like ZTE are strengthening their positions in the market, while brands like OnePlus are fastening their seat belts to enter the lucrative arena as soon as possible. As always, stay tuned to the blog to know more about these brands and come back for the top 20 series to see if these were able to make an impression on the users’ minds.
