After a couple of weeks missing in action, we’re back with our weekly roundup of the top new and updated iOS apps and games. This week, we’ve got some great new games, including a Clash of Clans spinoff, a run-and-gun platformer and a creepy psychological horror game. Among our top apps we have updates to some old favourites, as well as a new photography app. Let’s get started.
WhatsApp for iOS received a significant update over the past week. The app now supports document sharing, allowing you to send and receive PDFs. WhatsApp also gets third-party app sharing from Google Drive, OneDrive and DropBox, letting you share photos, videos and documents from these apps. The other new features of the update include the addition of a range of solid colours for chat backgrounds, the ability to zoom into videos while they’re playing, and improvements to photo and video browsing.
Snapchat’s lenses aren’t new, and while some of the more popular ones have stuck around for a while, there’s only one that’s taking the internet by storm. We’re talking about Face Swap. To use the filter, you need to have another person in the frame with you, and the filter automatically swaps your faces, making for some hilarious, and often horrifying results.
M Cam is a photography app that makes manual controls easy to use on your iPhone camera. The app lets you adjust shutter speed and ISO, and gives you the option of adjusting both settings or just one, in which case the app will automatically adjust the latter. The app also features manual focus, white balance, geo-tagging, grids, a timer, digital zoom and EXIF data visualisation. You can save captured images directly to your camera roll.
Clash Royale is a multiplayer card-collecting tower defense game from the makers of Clash of Clans. The spinoff features popular Clash of Clans troops, as well as the Royales, which include princes, knights, baby dragons and more. You’ll get to collect and upgrade cards, construct a battle deck to defeat opponents and form a clan to share cards and build a community. The game lets you duel players from around the world, challenge your clan mates and friends to private duels, and destroy your opponent’s towers to win crowns. You’ll also get to earn chests to unlock rewards, collect new cards and upgrade existing ones.
A run-and-gun game, in Lost Socks: Naughty Brothers, you play a sock who embarks on a quest to find his missing brother. The game spans three different locations and features over 30 levels packed with characters, bonuses, and obstacles. There are various in-game tasks and challenges that can be completed in different ways, as well as several guns you can add to your collection.
In this train puzzle game, you’ll be in control of a rail network, conducting and controlling tracks, managing movement, and keeping an eye out for crashes and near misses. You’ll get to grow your network, connecting various countries in Europe, and optimise your trains with rocket boosters, star medallions and more.
Popular racing game Nitro Nation embarks on a new chapter in this story-based game. Set in the world of illegal racing, the game features five chapters that follow Justin Carr, his friend Da Fly and a host of other characters. You’ll get to customise and upgrade your ride, choose from a selection of over 30 cars and explore three race environments. Apart from the Story mode, players can also choose Division, Street Race, Daily Races, Online Ladder and Underground Championship modes. Additionally, the game features a split-screen local multiplayer mode that can be played on the iPad or Apple TV.
In this psychological horror adventure game, you’ll play Fran, a young girl struggling with a mental disorder and the gruesome murder of her parents who were found dismembered in their home. Fran recovers from the incident to find herself in an asylum, from where she decides to escape to find her beloved cat Mr. Midnight and only living relative Aunt Grace. The chapter-based story-driven game is filled with puzzles of varying levels of difficulty, and features a hand-drawn 2D art style.
Free on the App Store all this week is popular children’s game Toca Kitchen 2. The game lets kids choose their ingredients, use different kitchen tools, create their own recipes and serve guests.
