"The upcoming festival season brings with it a long list of smartphones one can expect to land in India"

The festival season is almost here, and it looks like tech giants from across the globe are ready to bank on some of the excitement. October seems to be the perfect time to launch new devices in India, and this year is no different. From Apple’s iPhone 7 to the modular Moto Z, from HTC’s Desire 10 to the Xperia XZ from Sony, we have a long list of smartphones that are anticipated to be made available in India in October 2016. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Moto Z series

MotoMods 2

Lenovo unveiled the Moto Z range of smartphones at its Tech World event in San Francisco back in June comprising the Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play. The company has been sending out invites for an event on October 4th, where the new smartphones are expected to be launched in India. The highlight of the range is the semi modular design, which allows a range of modular accessories called Moto mods to be attached via high-powered magnets at the rear. Featuring metal unibody designs, the smartphones ditch the standard 3.5mm headphone jack in lieu of USB Type-C powered audio. Between the three models, we expect the Moto Z and Z Play to launch, while it's not very clear when the Z Force will land in India, if at all.

Apple iPhone 7 / 7 Plus

The Cupertino giant revealed its latest generation of iPhones this September, and the devices are heading towards India for an early October launch. The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus play host to a wide variety of new features such as refined designs with two new colour options, improved cameras, a faster A10 Fusion SoC, stereo speakers, brighter displays with a wider colour gamut and the company’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 10. Interestingly, both the devices skip a headphone jack, and only come with one lightning port. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be priced in India starting at Rs 60,000 and Rs 72,000 respectively, with the launch slated to take place on October 7th.

Samsung Galaxy Note7

Once it was launched, the Samsung Galaxy Note7 (first impressions) was deemed the smartphone to watch out for this year. That is, until the battery issues started pouring in from all directions leaving no option for the Korean giant but to issue a global recall of the device. It seems like the ominous clouds have receded, as Samsung is looking forward to re-launch the Galaxy Note7 in India after fixing the battery issues. The smartphone is a beast when it comes to hardware, as it comes with a 5.7-inch QHD curved Super AMOLED display, alongside an Exynos 8890 processor and 4GB of RAM.

Samsung Galaxy On8

As reported earlier, the Samsung Galaxy On8 has been launched on Flipkart and will be going on sale starting October 2nd during Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sales. The new smartphone features a brushed metal design with a diamond cut finish around the 7.8mm slim body. The 5.5-incher flaunts a full HD Super AMOLED canvas, and comes powered by a 1.6GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 processor, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded further via a microSD card. Interested folks can pick one up for themselves for a price tag of Rs 15,900.

Honor 8

Back in July, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor launched its latest flagship, the Honor 8, in its home market of China. The key highlight of the phone is its dual 12MP rear camera setup which works exactly like the setup seen on the Huawei P9. The Honor 8 rocks a metal unibody design with a fingerprint scanner, and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the brand’s own custom skin EMUI 4.1 on top. The phone is available in a variety of colours and comes with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of internal storage. It is widely expected that the Honor 8 will go on sale in India this October.

Sony Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact

Sony might be witnessing a lukewarm response in 2016, but that hasn’t stopped the brand from shelling out some interesting new smartphones. After unveiling the Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact at a pre-IFA event in Berlin, the devices are now expected to head straight to India. Both smartphones offer 23MP rear cameras with hardware stabilization, 3GB of RAM, USB Type-C ports and fast charging. In contrast to the 5.2-inch screen and metal design of the Xperia XZ, the X Compact features a smaller 4.6-inch canvas enclosed in a ceramic finish design. As expected of Sony smartphones, the handsets come with fingerprint scanners beneath the power button on the right edge of the phones.

HTC Desire 10 Pro / Desire 10 Lifestyle

HTC has refreshed its mid-range offerings with the launch of the Desire 10 Pro and Desire 10 Lifestyle smartphones. The new Desire phones flaunt metallic outlines and matte finish bodies, with the Pro variant getting a fingerprint scanner while the Lifestyle variant boasts 24-bit Hi-Res audio and HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition speakers. Both handsets sport a 5.5-inch display, but only the Pro variant gets a full HD resolution as the Desire 10 Lifestyle settles for a 720p canvas. Both new Desire 10 smartphones boot Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with the latest Sense UI on top. Interestingly, the devices have been listed on the brand’s Indian website, indicating an imminent launch in the country.

Gionee S6 Pro

From Gionee’s portfolio of smartphones, the recently unveiled Gionee S6 Pro might be the next device to go on sale in India. The key highlights of the device include its 5.5-inch full HD display that is powered by a MediaTek MT6755 processor and 4GB of RAM. For the shutterbugs, the device offers a 13MP camera at the back as well as a wide angle 8MP selfie snapper in the front. The Gionee S6 Pro is fueled by a 3,130mAh Li-Po battery which can be charged using the USB Type-C port. Another point worth noting is that the Gionee S6 Pro runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Amigo 3.2 UI on top.

Lenovo K6 range

Yes, we know it may sound a bit surprising. Lenovo unveiled the K4 Note (review) in India back in January, followed by the K5 Note (first impressions) a couple of months ago, and here we are talking about the Lenovo K6 range of smartphones. The brand unveiled the K6, K6 Power and K6 Note handsets at IFA, and it won’t be wrong to expect them to be launched here in India. All three smartphones offer full HD displays, Snapdragon 430 SoCs, 8MP selfie shooters and run Android Marshmallow. Going by the ongoing trend, Lenovo has also decided to opt for a metal unibody design for each of the devices in the K6 trio.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL

If you’ve been following the news recently, you might know that Google is expected to launch the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones on October 4th. Usually, the Indian launch of devices from Google are not far behind their global announcement, and given the handsets launch in the first week of October itself, that gives the brand enough time to bring them to India in the same month. The upcoming phone have been the center of numerous leaks which have given a fair idea of what to expect. For instance, both smartphones are rumoured to come with Snapdragon 820 processors, 4GB of RAM and 12MP/8MP cameras. They are expected to be IP53 certified and come running Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box.

Phew, there you have it. That’s a pretty long list of phones one can expect in India next month. So, if you’re looking for the best gift for your parents, siblings or other relatives, October will give you a plenty of choices. Plus, this list could get much longer once the month starts, as smartphone brands would want to get maximum mileage out of the festive season. It's already looking like a happy diwali indeed.
