"Here are a few affordable handsets that offer great value for money and come clad in metal"
What once seemed like a far-fetched dream is now a reality... over the last few months we’ve seen various major brands offer both form and function with the introduction of some stunning smartphones encased in metal bodies, without costing an arm and a leg. These smartphones don’t just offer performance under the hood, but also designs that are worth admiring. Today we look at some of the top smartphones priced below Rs 15,000 that use metal in their construction.
Huawei’s latest addition to the Honor lineup is the beautifully-made successor to the 4X, the Honor 5X. It features a metal design with chamfered edges and a brushed metal back fashioned out of aircraft-grade metal. The company has left no stone unturned in terms of offering a robust configuration, as the phone goes through a series of stress tests to ensure it lasts long. The phone looks quite premium and is designed such that it's less slippery than most other handsets with metal bodies. The back houses a fingerprint scanner that is both fast and accurate. What’s interesting though is Huawei’s addition of gestures for the fingerprint sensor which offers shortcuts at just the swipe of a finger on the sensor.
Underneath the full HD display lies an octa-core processor, 2GB RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. As a bonus, you also get dual-SIM support along with room for memory expansion. Pictures and videos turn out to be good as well, thanks to 13MP and 5MP cameras on the back and front respectively.
At just Rs 11,999, the Honor 5X is a complete package, and that too a beautiful one.
The Lenovo Vibe P1 comes wrapped in a silver and black body, and sports a 5.5inch full HD display. Under the hood, it is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor with 2GB RAM. A fingerprint scanner seems like a necessity nowadays, and Lenovo doesn’t disappoint by including the same in the smartphone. A 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera take care of your photography.
The highlight of the device is its massive 5,000mAh battery with support for quick charging. At Rs 14,999, it is the most expensive device in our list. But with seamless multitasking and excellent battery life, it more than makes up for its price.
The Le 1s from LeEco sports a metal unibody design to complement its hardware prowess. The fingerprint scanner on the back has a mirror finish while the front is dominated by a more symmetric design. Surprisingly, the smartphone still carries the Letv logo despite the company’s shift to a new name. An octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor powers the device along with 3GB of RAM. Sadly, the 32GB of inbuilt storage is not expandable further.
As far as software goes, the Le 1s runs Android Lollipop with the company’s own eUI on top. In the camera department, it boasts a 13-megapixel camera at the back and a 5MP shooter at the front. The Le 1s is available on Flipkart for Rs 10,999.
After creating a lot of buzz, Xiaomi finally unveiled the much-awaited Redmi Note 3 recently. Priced at Rs 9,999 for the lower-end variant, the Redmi Note 3 features a metal design with curved edges at the back to offer a better hand-held experience. Powering the smartphone is the new Snapdragon 650 chipset from Qualcomm and 2 / 3GB of RAM.
The 5.5-incher runs MIUI 7 atop of Android Lollipop. Moreover, a 4050mAh battery ensures one gets a full day of usage without the need to charge again at the end of the day. It is also one of few phones to feature VoLTE support for improved calling. A 16MP back camera and 5MP front camera take care of offering a richer take on mobile photography. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 sure seems like a budge powerhouse.
Lenovo is expected to showcase its VIBE K5 and K5 Plus smartphones in India on March 15th. The handsets were announced last month at MWC in Barcelona. The dual SIM metal-bodied smartphones feature 5-inch displays, with the VIBE K5 Plus opting for a 1080p panel as compared to the 720p one found on the VIBE K5. Both smartphones pack in support for 4G LTE, and come with a pair of 13MP and 5MP shooters.
The Lenovo VIBE K5 Plus come powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 616 chipset, while its sibling, the VIBE K5 gets power from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 415 processor. Complementing the CPU is 2 gigs of RAM on both phones. The starting price of these phones is expected to be around Rs 10,000.
