The mobile messaging service WhatsApp reports it has created a new record on New Year’s Eve. It has processed about 18 billion messages on the day, eclipsing its own previous record of 10 billion messages that was set in the month of August of 2012.
The firm further confirmed that it delivered 11 billion outbound and 7 billion inbound messages on December 31.
Earlier in October Apple claimed that about 300 billion texts were delivered by its iMessage text service in previous twelve months sent by its iOS users, which is less than a billion a day in an average.
As earlier reported and also highly speculated that Facebook would soon acquire WhatsApp, this big jump on the eve of New Year may strengthen the rumor further. However, tech website TechCrunch reports Facebook has denied this rumour.
WhatsApp is a cross-platform instant messaging app for smartphones on Android, Blackberry, iOS, Windows Phone and Symbian platforms and was founded in 2009.
