The YotaPhone offers LCD display at one side, and a power-saving E-ink display at the other.
Russian company, Yota devices has teased its YotaPhone a couple of times ever since its first showcase last year and demos in the CES and MWC. Though, the question was if such kind of device will ever be commercial and if yes, then when. Now the company has confirmed to TechCrunch that the device will be hitting globally by the end of this year in December. This is in line with the earlier reports, which suggested that it will be launched in the month of November.
YotaPhone touts of two displays, a 4.3 inch LCD display (1280 x 720 pixels) and a 4.3 inch Electronic Paper display. Users can use the device with the LCD display to do all the general smartphone tasks be it making calls, sending messages, checking emails, watching movies, playing games, and more. However, the magic happens at the back which offers an E-ink display which draws very less power from the battery. This will be useful for reading articles mainly, but it can be used in even better manner by mirroring the LCD display, enabling the user to read an article, view picture, etc. (in black and white mode). Interestingly, the E-ink won’t die even when the phone’s battery is finished, so you can save a route map or an electronic ticket and it will always be available to you.
The guts of the device include a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor coupled with a generous 2 GB of RAM. For memory, it gets a massive 32 GB of built-in storage. In camera department, it offers a 13 megapixels main camera with autofocus and LED flash, and 1 megapixels secondary camera. For connectivity purposes, it comes with 2G/ 3G network support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. It’s fueled by a battery of 1800 mAh capacity. The YotaPhone runs on the Android 4.2.2 JellyBean Operating System.
The specs of the device might not look very inspiring, but YotaPhone’s front and back displays surely makes it an interesting device. Company has remained tightlipped about its price and availability in developing countries like India.
