  • Samsung Galaxy Camera review: a 21x compact shooter brought to life by Android
    Sharif Sakr
    | engadget

There were no heckles, boos or crickets for Samsung`s reps back at IFA. But it`s fair to say that the atmosphere following its unveiling of the Galaxy Camera was as muted as it was polite. It didn`t help that most journalists in that meeting room were there primarily to see the Galaxy Note II, which was undoubtedly the show`s headline act. It was also worrisome that Nikon had recently released a half-hearted Android camera of its own -- the Coolp...

Even if many of the Android apps in the store — and all of the games, in my opinion — are superfluous to requirements here, the flexibility offered by Android is a killer feature. While other smart cameras will allow you to post your images to Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr, that’s often where the sharing stops. With Android, you can rest easy knowing that if a new photo app or social service appears, or even if you’re not interested in usi...

Pros: Instantly backs up your photos to the cloud ; Beautiful touchscreen ; Simple to use ; Expandable with apps

Cons: Image quality is no better than a $200 camera ; Battery life`s short for a camera ; Awkward manual shooting ; Constant notifications can be irritating

We`ve been watching phones evolve at a breakneck pace with smartphones all but taking over, while cameras were stuck in the 20th century. Well, no more - the Samsung Galaxy Camera aims to stir the point-and-shoot market the way the iPhone did the phone......

Pros: Point and shoot camera with 21x optical zoom and optical image stabilization ; Wide-angle 23mm lens, 1/2.3" sensor, 16.3MP resolution ; Xenon flash ; 1080p HD video recording at 30fps; 720p High Framerate video recording at 60fps; 768x512 120fps...

Cons: Image quality leaves a lot to be desired ; Lens is not dust tight ; Big for a point-and-shoot ; Small 1,650mAh battery ; No video light

Verdict: The Samsung Galaxy Camera is a rare breed of didgicam. This Android-powered connected camera is stuff typically shown off at tech exhibitions to wow the crowd and soon be forgotten by its maker. But the Galaxy Camera is the real deal - it`s available...

  • Android apps on a `proper` camera

While smartphones are great because they enable you to capture, edit and upload images to Twitter, Facebook and other social networks, they invariably have a piddlingly small sensor and a lens the size of a sequin. Despite technological advances, this combination is a prescription for noisy images, poor tonal range, chromatic aberration and distortion. So it`s not really a surprise that Samsung, a company that makes both smartphones and dedicated...

Pros: Responsive touchscreen controls, Social integration, Advanced and auto modes, Great apps, Impressive images,

Cons: A little big for some, Can`t use it as a phone, No macro shortcut,

It`s a camera. It`s Android. It`s an Android camera! And it`s the best one yet, but not without room for improvementOn a sweltering August afternoon, Samsung ushered a handfu......

Verdict: And that sentiment is true of the camera as a whole, really. It is possible to coax some great-looking shots out of it, it just takes more effort than it should for a camera in this price range....
