In the first season, we are introduced to the enigmatic and world-weary vampire novelist, Zen Misaki. When a passionate rookie editor, Asahi Sena, is assigned to him, she discovers his secret and his cooperation with the police on supernatural cases. Together, they, along with detective Natsuki Hayashibara, investigate incidents involving various 'jingai' (non-human entities), which gradually helps Misaki to reconnect with the human emotions he had long suppressed.
