Airtel and Idea Cellular quietly hike 3G data tariffs for postpaid customers

“Postpaid customers will now have to shell out Rs 300 for 1GB of 3G data instead of Rs 250 earlier”

Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular recently hiked data charges for their prepaid customers in various circles across India. Now the telecom operators have hiked charges for postpaid customers by about 20 percent. Vodafone had also hiked prepaid data tariffs last time around, but hasn’t increased rates for postpaid users as yet.

Airtel has hiked its tariffs in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP West and UP East circles. Idea on the other hand has increased its charges in Delhi, Punjab and UP West. Postpaid customers will now have to shell out Rs 300 for 1GB of 3G data as compared to Rs 250 earlier.

Airtel has stated that the change will be applicable only for new postpaid customers, and that this change came into effect about two months ago. The hike in the tariffs are a result of the March spectrum auction after which telecom operators had to shell out around Rs 1.1 lakh crore as payments to TRAI.
