“We are launching Amazon Food in select Bangalore pin codes, allowing customers to order from handpicked local restaurants and cloud kitchens that pass our high hygiene certification bar,” said Amazon spokesperson. The company has been trying to onboard restaurants with competitive commissions since mid-2019 and is expected to roll out the service to more cities soon across the country soon.
With Swiggy and Zomato cutting down on cloud kitchens divisions, reporting losses and laying off employees due to the coronavirus crisis hit in April and May, it remains to be soon how fruitful Amazon’s new venture turns out. The new service may create jobs for those that have been laid off in other food delivery companies. As for the bigger picture, Amazon seems to be aiming to become a one-stop solution for home needs, electronics, fashion and now with prepared meals.
