Amazon will pump $1 billion to digitise SMBs in India: Jeff Bezos

“The e-commerce platform also plans to export $10 billion worth of ‘Make in India’ products by 2025”

Amazon is betting big on India’s small and medium businesses (SMBs). The e-commerce platform plans to invest as much as $1 billion to digitise small and medium businesses and expand their footprint in the global market, Amazon’s chief Jeff Bezos said at an event in India. Additionally, Amazon will export ‘Make in India’ products worth $10 billion by 2025, setup Digital Haats in 100 cities, villages, and communities, and support local neighbourhood shops and Kiranas with Amazon Easy.

Digital Haats are said to provide services like e-commerce onboarding, imaging and cataloguing, warehouse space, logistics, digital marketing, and compliance. The services will be available to both MSMEs and local neighbourhoods irrespective of their partnership with Amazon. Amazon Easy, on the other hand, will help local kirana stores set up kiosks and earn a commission when customers purchase the product through Amazon.

Bezos, who is in India for the first-ever Amazon India SMBhav event in New Delhi, said that in the 21st century the most important alliance is going to be between India and the US. “I want to make a prediction for you – the 21st century is going to be the Indian century. This (India) country has something special,” he added. 

SMBhav is hosting more than 3,000 businesses, traders, startups, and technology solution companies. “The two-day event is designed to provide MSMEs in India an opportunity to engage with Amazon on how to expand their growth nationally and internationally, share learnings, understand new opportunities for online businesses in India, and get insights into future trends,” per a report by the Economic Times.
