Apple has for long been said to be working on a foldable display iPhone. While some reports have tipped the device to get a clamshell-like design, others have predicted that the device will feature a notebook-style design. Now, a new report not only sheds light on the design and features of this upcoming foldable iPhone, but it also shared the expected timeline of launch and even the price of this device.
Apple’s foldable iPhone: expected features
- According to the details shared by Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo on Medium, Apple’s first foldable iPhone will feature a book-style design with a crease-less display. While the inner display is expected to measure 7.8 inches, the outer display is expected to measure 5.5 inches.
- It is expected to measure 9mm to 9.5mm when folded and 4.5mm to 4.8mm when unfolded and feature a titanium alloy casing.
- However, the company is expected to combine stainless steel and titanium alloy for the hinge. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the analyst says that the hinge cover and the middle frame NPI of the foldable iPhone will be Bright Laser Technologies (BLT), which will 3D print both the components owing to the complexities of the design.
- Apple is also expected to ditch Face ID to opt for a side-mounted Touch ID button owing to thickness constraints.
- The analyst says that the foldable iPhone will have a dual camera setup at the back and a single front-facing camera that will be available in both folded and unfolded states.
- On the battery front, Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone model is expected to use the same high-density battery cells as the one it will use in the iPhone 17.
- Furthermore, Kuo says that the device will include new AI features such as cross-app integration and ability to use an AI chatbot while using an app in the background.
Apple’s foldable iPhone: expected price and availability
- The Apple analyst, in his blog, wrote that Apple will market the foldable iPhone as a premium device and that it could be priced between $2,000 (Rs 1.74 lakh approximately) and $2,500 (Rs 2.17 lakh approximately).
- He predicts that Apple will lock the final specifications in the second quarter of 2025 and begin the mass production in the fourth quarter of 2026. However, it will limit the shipment to 3-5 millions in 2026.
The company is expected to launch a second-generation foldable iPhone in 2027. The mass production of this model is expected to begin in the second half of 2027 and the company could ship around 20 million units of the device the same year.
