“This could be the Cupertino giant’s first low-cost iPhone to come out after iPhone SE in 2016, that was launched at $399”
Apple has had a relatively rough time in the recent past, with sales sinking all over the globe. To win back its lost customers, Apple is planning on launching a lower-cost iPhone in 2020, according to a new report. This should help Apple take on Huawei and other Chinese rivals and also falls in-line with an earlier report about a 2020 model with the design of the iPhone 8. When launched, it could become the Cupertino giant’s first low-cost iPhone to come out after iPhone SE in 2016, which was launched at $399 (Rs 39,990 in India). Though the exact model name hasn’t been revealed yet, the Nikkei report suggests that it could be the next-generation iPhone SE.
This move comes in a time when Apple reported its first-ever decline in iPhone shipments in 2018. The original iPhone SE reportedly sold over 30 million units in 2016 and another 10 million between 2017 and 2018, the report says, citing Yuanta Investment Consulting. A low-cost iPhone with a smaller display can help Apple boost sales in the affordable segment, which is essential because consumers are keeping their phones for longer periods due to the rising costs as well as improving technology.
The size of the new low-cost iPhone is said to be similar to the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 from 2017, said the Nikkei report. Furthermore, it is expected to share similar components as this year’s iPhones but would feature a low-cost liquid crystal display to keep the pricing in check. Since we’re still months away from the said launch, we are bound to come across more details soon.
Jeff Pu, a veteran tech analyst at GF Securities cited in the report, says, “The cheaper iPhone SE could serve as a sales momentum kicker the first half next year if the new premium iPhones do not perform well in the coming months.” The initial production run of 2019’s iPhones is said to be around 10 percent less than the 80-85 million during the same period last year. But if there is enough demand, Apple could increase the orders anytime. The brand is also lagging behind in launching a 5G phone as well, though that will have to wait till late 2020.
