Apple iPhone XS Max scores 105 in DxOMark’s test to rank as the second best camera phone

“The iPhone XS Max is surpassed only by the triple camera-toting Huawei P20 Pro”

Apple’s new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max (first impressions) have been out for some time now and they’ve been subjected to various physical as well as hardware tests to ascertain the true limits of their capacity. Now DxOMark has put the cameras of the iPhone XS Max through the paces. If you’re not aware, DxOMark is a world-renowned camera reviewer and its benchmarks are held in high regard.

Spec-wise, the Apple iPhone XS Max has dual 12MP cameras at the rear. One of those is a telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.4, while the other’s a wide-angle lens with a f/1.8 aperture. At the front is a 7MP selfie shooter. Do note that both the iPhone XS and XS Max have the same camera setup so findings of the test apply to both of them.

The research outfit stated in its test that the iPhone XS Max has “excellent” photo and video quality in bright light, with a “very wide dynamic range and good detail.” The phone got a score of 110 in photos while it received 96 in videos. For photos, DxOMark stated that outdoor shots have great detail and exposure is also spot on with pleasant colours. The Smart HDR feature also impressed in the test with its wider dynamic range and target exposure. The weak point of the selfie camera is the zoom and software-based bokeh effect which makes mistakes in calculating depth. Nonetheless, the photo qualities are still held in high regard and DXOMark considers it a “surefire option for any mobile photographer.

In terms of videos, DxOMark said the iPhone XS Max shows “outstanding video quality in bright light.” The firm noted video footage has fast autofocus and good image stabilisation, but struggles in low light where luminance noise is visible.

In sum, DxOMark concludes that the Apple iPhone XS Max has “one of the best mobile cameras” money can buy. With an overall score of 105, the handset ranks just below Huawei’s P20 Pro (review), which is the king of the hill for smartphone photography with a total 109 points.
