“The iPhone XS Max carries a sticker price of Rs 1,09,900 for the base variant”
Earlier this month, Apple unveiled its latest iPhones called the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. At the starting price of Rs 1,09,900, the iPhone XS Max has arrived as the Cupertino tech giant’s most expensive iPhone to date. The smartphone offers the same design as its predecessor, but flaunts the second-gen OLED screen from the company. The next-gen display and other new hardware components have added a lot to the average asking price of the new iPhone alongside increasing the production cost for the brand. Now a report has revealed how much it costs Apple to make a single unit of the iPhone XS Max.
Tech Insights has released a teardown of the Apple iPhone XS Max. In addition, the brand has revealed the bill of material cost of the latest offering from the brand. As per the report, it costs Apple $443 (~Rs 72,000) to make a single unit of the iPhone XS Max. In comparison, the base variant of the last year’s iPhone X (review) had a making cost of $395.44. Notably, Apple is selling the base model of the iPhone XS Max in India at the starting price of Rs 1,09,900.

The report further reveals that at $80.50, the most expensive component in the iPhone XS Max is its 2nd-gen OLED screen, which coincidentally, is the largest ever in an iPhone at 6.5-inches. The second and third most expensive parts of the device include the applications processor / modems and non-volatile memory at $72 and $64.50, respectively. The phone’s mechanicals / housings and camera components reportedly cost Apple $58 and $44 respectively. The device is packed with a slightly bigger battery, which is valued at $9. Notably, the cost of testing, assembling, and supporting materials for the iPhone XS Max is $24.50.
Additionally, the report suggests that the cost of making has increased from the iPhone X to the iPhone XS Max as the latter offers a larger, heavier housing. The internal frame of the newer phone carries more process costs around spot welds, inserts, etc.

Considering all these costs, Apple is reportedly making a profit of around Rs 77,900 from a single unit of the base model of the iPhone XS Max. However, it’s worth noting that this teardown doesn’t take into account several other costs that factor into the retail price of a smartphone. This includes the research and development, marketing, logistics, distribution, and warehousing. It’s worth mentioning that the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are currently available to pre-order in India, and will go on sale starting September 28th.
