- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max default camera mode is 24MP.
- Apple suggests using this default mode as it offers higher dynamic range and zero shutter lag.
- Here’s a detailed explanation on using the 24MP camera mode.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max offer the best there is from Apple so far. The new iPhones come in a titanium build, better cameras, a new processor, and brighter displays. The Pro models are known for their camera prowess, and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are no less. Apple now has a suggestion of using the default 24MP camera mode to make the most of the iPhone 15 Pro models.
24MP camera on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max
- The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max both feature a 48MP primary camera, but the default camera sensor is 24 megapixels, an increase from 12 megapixels on last year’s Pro models. Shooting from the 48MP camera does make sense as you’d get better photos but this also results in larger image files.
- Apple’s VP of Camera Software Engineering, Jon McCormack, suggests people use the default 24MP camera to get the ‘Goldilocks moment’ since you get a little bit more dynamic range.
“Because when shooting at 24-megapixels, we shoot 12 high and 12 low — we actually shoot multiple of those — and we pick and then merge. There is, basically, a bigger bracket between the 12 high and the 12 low,” Cormack explained to PetaPixel. - He added how with the 48MP camera you get extended dynamic range as opposed to high dynamic range with the 24MP camera. This essentially means more processing time for 24MP photos but this instead results in “a bit more dynamic range into Deep Fusion”.
- The Goldilocks moment here is getting the “extra dynamic range from the 12 and the detail transfer that comes in from the 48,” giving you that ‘just right’ image. Another advantage that one would get shooting at 24MP would be zero shutter lag.

The iPhone 15 Pro’s 48MP primary sensor is accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12MP telephoto sensor. Up front, there’s a 12MP TrueDepth camera. These are the best cameras that you’ll get on an iPhone, and with Apple’s software in the background you should be getting some crazy good photos and videos.
