ASUS ROG Phone 7 has been launched in India as a successor to the ROG Phone 6 from last year. The flagship, like its predecessors, is specifically designed for hardcore mobile gamers, featuring a design and specifications that cater to this niche audience. The handset ships with a design and specifications that will be quite appealing to the niche audience. The ROG Phone 7 rocks an upgraded GameCool 7 thermal system that is claimed to cool down the CPU from all directions. In this article, we will be comparing the ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 7 to see what upgrades the newer model has received.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 is priced at Rs 71,999 for the sole 12GB RAM and 128GB storage option. The handset comes in Phantom Black and Storm White colour options. The all-new ASUS ROG Phone 7 is also equipped with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, but it has been priced at Rs 74,999. The handset will be available in Phantom Black and Storm White colours via Vijay Sales, both online and offline stores from May 2023 onwards.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 has sizeable bezels above and below the screen. The volume rockers and power buttons are on the right edge. The back of the phone houses triple camera sensors and an LED flash. There is ROG (RGB light) logo that is completely customisable. There is AirTrigger 6 control system that lets you map up to 14 specific touchpoints, and there are nine input methods with these two ultrasonic buttons, including the new “press and lift”.

On the other hand, the ASUS ROG Phone 7 builds on the design of the ROG Phone 6. The phone has sizeable bezels above and below the screen, with the top section housing the selfie shooter. The volume rocker and power buttons are on the right edge. There is ROG (RGB) lighting on the back panel along with triple camera sensors and an LED flash placed inside a rectangular module.

ASUS ROG Phone 6 sports a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 2448×1080 pixel resolution, 395PPI, 165Hz refresh rate, Pixelworks i6 Processor, HDR10+, and 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection.

The ASUS ROG Phone 7, in contrast, has a 6.78-inch FHD+ Samsung AMOLED display with 2448×1080, up to 165Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, 1500nits brightness and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC paired with Adreno GPU for graphics. The chipset is coupled with 8GB/12GB LPDDR5 RAM with 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. The phone has a GameCool 6 cooling system that uses three different approaches to bring down the CPU temperature by up to 10 degrees centigrade while gaming.

The ASUS ROG Phone 7 ships with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 paired with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The handset is equipped with an upgraded GameCool 7 thermal system, which is claimed to be the best yet. The thermal system uses a three-pronged approach that will cool the CPU from all directions. For short sessions, the Boron Nitride (BN) thermal compound on one side of the CPU reduces throttling. Next, the mid-length sessions are handled by the bigger vapour chamber and graphite sheets on the other side of the CPU. Lastly, for long-term sessions, the incorporated AI-powered active cooling system kicks in.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 has a triple camera setup on the back, with a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a macro camera. There is a 12MP sensor on the front for selfie and video calling needs.

On the other hand, the ROG Phone 7 has a 50MP Sony IMX766 main sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens and an 8MP macro lens. There is a 32MP sensor on the front for selfies and video chats.

Battery and Software

There is a 6,000mAh battery on both the ASUS ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 7 and 65W HyperCharge support on board. 

The ROG Phone 6 boots Android 12-based ROG UI and Zen UI out of the box, while the ROG Phone 7 boots Android 13 with ROG UI and Zen UI. Both devices are promised to get two major OS upgrades and four years of security updates.

Connectivity and IP rating

Connectivity options on the ROG Phone 6 include 5G, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou, Galileo(E1+E5a), QZSS(L1+L5), NavIC(L5), NFC, and USB Type-C port. The ROG Phone 6 comes with an IPX4 rating, which protects it from minor splashes.

However, the ROG Phone 7 is IP54 rated for better protection against water as well as dust.  In terms of connectivity, it features Wi-Fi 7 802.11 be, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou, USB Type-C, and NFC. The ROG Phone 7 ships with an IPX5 rating for dust resistance.
