ASUS Zenbook A14 first impressions: a lightweight wonder

The new ASUS Zenbook A14, showcased at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show 2025, represents a prominent addition to the company’s Zenbook lineup. This model distinguishes itself by integrating Qualcomm’s Snapdragon hardware into a newly designed, lightweight chassis that weighs just under a kilogram. Aimed at users seeking portability without compromising on daily performance, the Zenbook A14 offers a blend of modern aesthetics and efficient computing.

Design

The Zenbook A14 stands out as one of the lightest 14-inch laptops available on the market at just 980-grams. This impressive weight reduction has been achieved through the use of a ceramic aluminum-magnesium alloy for the entire chassis. This is the same material ASUS used to treat the lid on the Zenbook S14 and Zenbook S16 from last year.

Personally, I didn’t find the finish to be as premium as I was expecting, but it tends to grow on you. Despite its lightweight nature, the laptop also seems to maintain a fairly robust build quality. ASUS claims that this material is wear and scratch resistant and additionally the laptop meets MIL-STD 810H military standard for improved durability. ASUS will be offering the Zenbook A14 in two colour options including Zabriskie Beige and Iceland Gray.

The 14-inch OLED display on the Zenbook A14 comes with a 16:10 aspect ratio, offering a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels with a peak brightness of 600-nits with 100% coverage of DCI-P3 and 133% of sRGB with Delta E < 1. It is also Vesa certified, supports Display HDR True Black 600, SGS Eye Care Display. However, the display is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate and lacks touch functionality.

The keyboard and touchpad are designed for comfortable use. Like previous models, the touchpad on the Zenbook A14 comes with gesture support allowing you to quickly adjust volume, screen brightness, or seek video playback. In terms of I/O there are sufficient ports including two USB 4.0 Type-C, a USB-A 3.2 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a full-size HDMI 2.1.

Specifications

The Zenbook A14 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-78-100) processor, featuring 12-cores and a maximum clock speed of 3.4GHz. There is also a more affordable option which comes with the Snapdragon X chip that comes with 8-cores and a maximum clock of 2.97GHz. For thermal management, ASUS has crammed two cooling fans and a thicker heat pipe. The laptop comes equipped with 16GB of LPDDR5-8488 RAM, which is soldered onto the motherboard, and a 512GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD for storage, utilizing a single M.2 2280 slot.

Wireless connectivity options include WiFi 7 (via Qualcomm FastConnect 7800) and Bluetooth 5.4. The device also houses a 70Whr battery, contributing to its excellent runtime of up to 32-hours when playing offline videos. Lastly, the full-HD webcam on the Zenbook A14 comes with IR function to support Windows Hello, to quickly log in to Windows.

Pricing and availability

The Asus Zenbook A14 is currently available for pre-order from the ASUS online store starting at Rs 99,990 for the Snapdragon X variant, while the Snapdragon X Elite model is priced at Rs 1,29,990. The company has a special pre-order offer where customers get branded earbuds, a 2-year additional warranty, and 3-years of local accidental damage protection, with total benefits worth Rs 15,998 available at just Rs 1.

Final thoughts

The Asus Zenbook A14 offers a compelling package for users prioritizing portability and daily computing tasks. Its lightweight design, solid build quality, and efficient performance should make it suitable for casual use and multitasking. However, the 60Hz non-touch display and limited graphics performance may not meet the needs of professionals requiring higher-end specifications.

Additionally, the reliance on Windows on ARM may present certain limitations in software compatibility and performance. Overall, while the Zenbook A14 excels in portability and design, potential buyers should consider their specific performance requirements and the associated price point before making a purchase decision. We are currently testing the Zenbook A14, so stay tuned for our full review.
