“Both the ZenFone 4 Selfie and OPPO F3 come with dual camera modules on the front”
The tagline for OPPO smartphones is ‘Selfie Expert’, which shows how confident the brand is about the selfie capabilities of its devices. Earlier this year, it launched the OPPO F3 (review) in India, which brought dual front cameras in the affordable segment. While the smartphone is a strong contender if you’re looking for a selfie smartphone in the sub-Rs 20k segment, ASUS’ latest, the ZenFone 4 Selfie (first impressions) is putting up a strong challenge with dual selfie shooters of its own. If you’re also confused between the two, then we’ve pitted them against each other to see which one comes out on top.
Design and display
As far as the design is concerned, at first glance, you can mistake one for the other since the fascia and the aesthetics are almost identical. Both have full metal unibody designs with rounded corners and chamfered edges. Even the fingerprint scanners below the displays are oval shaped on both devices. It’s only when you take a closer look, you will notice that the placement of camera modules and sensors differ on both. On the ZenFone 4 Selfie, there is a camera module on either side of the earpiece, whereas on the F3 both are on the left.
Coming to the display, both handsets sport 5.5-inch panels. However, the OPPO F3 gets an upper hand here since it comes with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels as compared to 1,280 x 720 pixels on the ZenFone 4 Selfie. As a result, the OPPO handset offers a sharper and better viewing experience.
Performance and storage
Once you get past the similarities in the design, that’s when the differences surface. This is because the OPPO F3 comes with a MediaTek MT6750T SoC with 4GB of RAM. While the processor is no slouch, the Snapdragon 430 with 4GB RAM in ZenFone 4 Selfie is slightly better in terms of power efficiency and speed. Both have 64GB of storage however, ZenFone 4 Selfie supports expandable storage up to 2TB as opposed to 128GB on OPPO F3. Interestingly, both phones also offer dedicated expansion slots, which means, you won’t need to give up on the dual-SIM functionality to top up the storage.
Speaking of software, the ZenFone 4 Selfie being the latest, gets the Android Nougat treatment, whereas the OPPO F3 runs the dated Android Marshmallow. Both devices are layered with their custom skins running atop Google’s OS.
Dual selfie cameras
Now, on to the USP of the smartphones – the dual-camera modules on the front panel. While the secondary cameras on both remain the same at 8-megapixels, it’s the primary camera that lets the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie take the cake. It comes with a combination of 20MP + 8MP selfie camera, whereas, OPPO F3 has a 16MP + 8MP setup. Both the secondary shooters are wide angle, ensuring that one can click groupfies easily. While the F3 has a screen flash along with a variety of beauty modes, what turns the tide in ZenFone 4 Selfie’s favour is that it has a soft LED flash along with offering beauty mode in photos, videos and even live streams.
Primary camera and battery
Speaking of the rear camera, the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie comes with a better 16-megapixel snapper with Phase Detection Auto Focus. On the other hand, the OPPO F3 flaunts a 13-megapixel camera with PDAF. Both of them feature pro mode as well as a number of other modes to suit different situations. However, the OPPO F3 claims to have better low-light imaging and anti-shake features, which are a plus. In comparison, the ZF4 Selfie comes with the proprietary Pixelmaster technology, which has been lauded in previous offerings from ASUS.
Moving on to the battery, there is not much difference between the two since the ZenFone 4 Selfie features a 3,000mAh unit and OPPO F3 has a 3,200mAh battery.
Having combed through the spec sheet and other finer details of both handsets, one can now safely assume that both smartphones are neck to neck. However, if you ask us, the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie seems to have an edge over OPPO’s F3. This is mainly because of the up-to-date spec sheet and newer Android build, not to mention that it’s slightly more affordable. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comment box below.
