- Paytm pulled from Google Play Store
- Google said that Play Store prohibits online casinos and facilitating sports betting
- Paytm has been removed ahead of IPL 2020
Update: Paytm has provided an update on the matter via a tweet. The company says the app will be back on Google Play Store soon and ensures its users that their money is safe.
Paytm has been pulled from the Google Play Store in India. The payments app cannot be found on the app store for Android but is still available on the Apple App Store. It seems Google has removed Paytm from the Play Store for promoting gambling. As per a report by TechCrunch, Google said that “Play Store prohibits online casinos and other unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting in India.”
The removal of Paytm from the Google Play Store comes just a day before the start of IPL 2020 in India. In addition to facilitating sports betting, Google said that if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real cash it violates its Play Store policies.
As per the report, past seasons of IPL have seen a spike in apps promoting sports betting. Paytm has seemingly been promoting gambling on its app ahead of the IPL 2020, which is why the app has been pulled from the Google Play Store. Google has reportedly also asked Disney+ Hotstar to display a warning before showing ads for fantasy sports app.
As of now, it is unclear when Paytm will return to the Google Play Store. The app is still available on the Apple App Store and is working for anyone who has already installed the app.
