EV subsidy in India

The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme of the Government of India offers a subsidy of Rs 15000/kWh on the purchase of new electric vehicles. In addition, the Delhi government is also offering subsidies on the purchase of an electric vehicle, depending upon the type of vehicle – two-wheeler, three-wheeler, and four-wheeler. The extra incentive provided by the state government in addition to the FAME incentive by the union government helps buyers financially as it reduces the upfront cost by 50-60 percent.

Delhi government’s electric scooter and car subsidy

For electric two-wheelers, Delhi electric vehicle subsidy is Rs 5,000 per kWh of battery capacity with a maximum limit of Rs 30,000. Up to Rs 30,000 Delhi electric vehicle subsidy is available for electric three-wheelers, rickshaws, and freight carriers. For electric cars and SUVs, Delhi electric vehicle subsidy is Rs 10,000 per kWh of battery capacity for the first thousand EV buyers and is capped at Rs 1.5 lakhs.

Along with the electric vehicle subsidy in Delhi, buyers also get a Rs 5000-7000 scrapping incentive as well as a waiver of road tax and registration fee. All these monetary benefits makes the upfront cost of EVs almost at par with internal combustion engine vehicles.

Eligibility

A range of two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler electric vehicles qualify for the Delhi electric vehicle subsidy, giving buyers ample choices to choose the model that suits their requirements. There are over 100 EV models eligible for electric vehicle subsidy in Delhi, including 45 e-rikshaws and 12 four-wheelers. The government has clearly defined eligibility criteria as per the EV segments and categories.

Several Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have designed and developed electric vehicle models complying with the government’s eligibility criteria. For the convenience of buyers, several dealers are peppered across the city, along with charging stations that are vital for the smooth operation of electric vehicles on the roads of the national capital region. Both monetary benefit and sound infrastructure are important to boost the adoption of EV.
