“The JioPhone will let you make video calls through a front camera”
At RIL’s 40th AGM last month, Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani officially unveiled the JioPhone – a feature phone with 4G VoLTE support. The official specifications and images of the device we received at the time pointed to a basic device with a 2.4-inch display, and a single VGA rear camera. However, 91mobiles has now managed to obtain live images of the JioPhone from a Delhi-based retailer, which show a device with a front facing camera. Do note, the background in the images has been blurred to protect the identity of the retailer.
The images only give us a view of the front panel of the phone, where you can see a colour display, front camera and earpiece at the top and alphanumberic keyboard at the bottom. The green call button also has a small icon for video calling, which interestingly was also present on the official render. The official spec sheet of the JioPhone which we also received from the retailer doesn’t mention the front camera, so it’s possible that this is an entirely different model. We haven’t been able to confirm if this is the final device that will be made available to consumers, or if it will be a different variant that’s priced higher.
Interestingly, the spec sheet we obtained also mentions Facebook, which confirms support for the social networking app. WhatsApp, unfortunately, isn’t listed, but is expected to be supported in the future.
91mobiles has also learned that retailers interested in selling the JioPhone would need to make pre-bookings with the company through the BHIM app. For customers, pre-booking for the JioPhone opens on August 24th, but you can register your interest in the device through the Jio website or SMS. While Reliance claims the JioPhone is ‘free’, customers will still need to make a refundable deposit of Rs 1,500, which they can claim on returning the device after a period of three years. There are also reports claiming Reliance might offer users a partial refund if they choose to return the device before the stipulated time frame.
