Facebook scams are one of the most common ones to occur, and they still continue to target users. A new one that’s locking people out of their Facebook accounts by clicking on a phishing link which looks very suspicious in nature but people still manage to fall for it. The phishing link is camouflaged with a “look who died” cover to entice people into clicking on it.

- In this Facebook scam, hackers, impersonating as someone you may know, are sending users messages with a link that says, “Look who died” along with emoji that express shock. It’s also accompanied with phrases that say, “I know you knew him” or “Died in an accident,” according to reports.
- The message looks enticing enough to grab someone unaware and eventually making them click on the link. Upon clicking on the link, the next step is either to ask for the user’s Facebook credentials to continue reading the post.
- In some cases, their Facebook account is immediately hacked and they’re locked out of their accounts. Since it’s a phishing scam the plan is to send it to as many people as possible, and it’s done in this case too by sending the link to everyone in their contact list.
This makes the scam more believable since the message is sent to that person’s contacts on Facebook. If it comes from someone you know then the chances of opening the link is more than from a stranger. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t click on such links that seem suspicious from the first look. Also, anything that comes with a link has to be avoided because it’s most likely a scam.
If you do end up receiving a similar message you can delete it and report the account. And if it’s from someone you know, you should inform that person about it. Facebook does have tools to report if your account is hacked but the process is tedious and you may not end up recovering your account.
