- Foldable iPhone will launch in 2023, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims.
- Apple expects to ship around 15 to 20 million units of the foldable iPhone.
- According to Kuo, the foldable iPhone could feature an 8-inch display.
In March this year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on a foldable iPhone that would launch in 2023. Now, Kuo reveals some more information regarding the foldable iPhone. As reported by 9to5Mac, Kuo reiterated that Apple will launch a foldable iPhone in 2023. Moreover, he added that Apple expects to ship around 15 to 20 million foldable iPhones in the first year of its launch. He has also suggested the display size of the upcoming foldable iPhone.
Foldable iPhone might have an 8-inch Samsung display
While the analyst had previously pointed that the first foldable iPhone will have a display size between 7.5 and 8 inches, he now claims that the first foldable iPhone will have an 8-inch display. According to Kuo, Apple will source the displays for the foldable iPhone exclusively from Samsung. The Korean tech giant has vast experience in manufacturing foldable displays, which, the company has been using in its foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold series and the Galaxy Z Flip lineup.
Apple likely to be industry leader in foldable phones
The Android platform is not fully optimized for tablet usage. For example, it doesn’t fully utilize the screen real estate and the OS has very few tablet-focused features. Moreover, very few apps on Android support tablet mode. Apple, on the other hand, offers an excellent ecosystem for tablets. The iPadOS for iPads is much more intuitive compared to the Android OS on tablets. Plus, a vast number of apps on iOS are optimized for iPad. If Apple launches a foldable iPhone that can also act as a tablet, then Apple might offer a class-leading tablet experience. And this is what will give Apple an advantage with its first foldable iPhone, said Kuo.
“At present, the product position of foldable smartphones is mainly to integrate the smartphone and tablet. But we believe that the foldable smartphone is only one of the applications of the foldable design. We predict that foldable devices will blur the product segmentations between smartphones, tablets, and laptops in the future. With its cross-product ecosystems and hardware design advantages, Apple will be the biggest winner in the new foldable device trend.” Kuo added.
