“The Gionee Smart Life Watch is a new affordable fitness tracker that offers quite a few features”

Gionee was one of the first brands that helped put Chinese smartphones on the radar for us Indians. After laying low for a bit, it’s back in the market and has also launched an affordable fitness watch in the form of the new Smart Life Watch. The store shelves, both online and offline, are crammed with quite a few affordable options when it comes to fitness bands these days, so let’s see what the Gionee Smart Life Watch brings to your wrist.

In terms of design, the Gionee Smart Life Watch resembles a regular watch with its 1.3-inch IPS full colour touch display. The display is layered with 2.5D Gorilla Glass and the device is also waterproof up to a depth of 50 meters. The watch case is fashioned out of stainless steel, which is said to be a first in the affordable segment. That said, the back of the case is still plastic, and the rear is where you’ll find the heart rate monitor and the charging pins. The latter hook up to a proprietary charging dongle, which is included in the box.

With its grey-black colour theme, the watch doesn’t stand out much in terms of looks, but it’s definitely lightweight, and along with a silicone strap that features a regular pin-and-buckle mechanism, should be comfortable to wear for long periods as well.

The fitness features include step count, continuous heart rate, sleep monitoring, etc. The device can track various exercises like running, walking, cycling, climbing, treadmill, spinning and yoga. It also allows to control music on the connected phone, set alarms and timers, and view notifications mirrored from your handset. The device even has menstrual cycle monitoring that should be useful for women, and and far as we know, this is one feature no other fitness band offers in this price range.

The Gionee Smart Life Watch uses the Gbuddy app (available for both iOS and Android) to sync data. The app, which looks quite feature rich, displays detailed info on your physical activity and also lets you set various options for the watch, such as call and app alerts, add alarms, specifiy timings for idle alerts etc.

The interface of the watch is pretty straightforward, and mainly swipe-driven. Swiping right on the watch face displays a quick settings panel, swiping down shows your notification history, swiping up show physical activity and steps, while swiping left shows the icons for the built in apps. The touchscreen seems fairly responsive, though can’t really match up to the vividness of AMOLED screens.

Priced at Rs 2,999 and available to buy on Flipkart, the Gionee Smart Life Watch adds to the array of options for those looking for a fitness watch that doesn’t break the bank, and for its asking price offers quite a few features.
