The controversial Freedom 251 was the most trending smartphone in India in 2016 as per Google

Google has released the list of top trending mobile devices of 2016 on Google Search in India. Surprisingly, the Rs 251 Freedom 251, which never really went on sale, was the top trending smartphone this year, beating the iPhone 7 which came in at second place. It was followed by the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Lenovo K4 Note and Samsung Galaxy J7, which bagged the third, fourth, and fifth spots respectively.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 was the top trending budget phablet this year. In September, Xiaomi claimed to have sold over 2.3 million units of the phones since launch. While the insights Google shares are interesting, it’s worth noting that they only represent the top trending phones in India, and do not necessarily reflect sales.
