“Google has officially launched the mid-range Pixel 3a XL powered by Snapdragon 670 and featuring a plastic body”
The Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have been leaked widely and we already knew all about the phone even before it was launched. Google has been planning to launch somewhat affordable Pixel phones from a while now. Finally, the series is now a reality and it will compete against phones such as the OnePlus 6T, Samsung Galaxy S10e and the iPhone XR, at least in terms of pricing. Before comparing it with other devices in its price range, let’s see how it compares to the more expensive Pixel 3 XL.
Pixel 3a XL vs Pixel 3 XL price in India
Google released the Pixel 3 series in October last year, and the phones have been available in India ever since. The 64GB variant of the Pixel 3 XL is priced around Rs 61,000 in the country. The device has seen several price cuts and you can get one for as low as Rs 57,000. The 128GB variant is priced at Rs 71,000.
On the other hand, despite cost cutting, the mid-range Pixel 3a XL is not exactly affordable. It is priced at Rs 44,999 and will go on sale in India on May 8th. It will be available in Black or White colour options, but the Purple variant will most likely not be available in the country. The phone will be available for pre-order via Flipkart on May 8th and shipping will commence on May 15th. In terms of pricing, the Pixel 3a XL is cheaper than the Pixel 3 XL, but cannot really compete with phones such as the OnePlus 6T. Nevertheless, let us get to the specifications.
Pixel 3a XL vs Pixel 3 XL specifications
If you do not care about a plastic shell and mid-range hardware, but want the best camera, then the Pixel 3a XL could be the buy for you. Google has cut down on costs by opting for a polycarbonate body with a Asahi Glass on the mid-range phone. It still features a dual-tone design, but isn’t as premium as the glass body on the Pixel 3 XL. However, the ugly notch from Pixel 3 XL is no longer present on the 3a XL. It has a 6-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display. The phone has a fingerprint scanner at the back and also features a headphone jack, which is nice.
The Pixel 3a XL has a single 8-megapixel front camera, compared to the dual-camera setup on the Pixel 3 XL. Fortunately, the stereo speakers haven’t been removed on the mid-range model. Early rumours and reports had suggested that Google might get rid of the stereo speakers on the phone. Now, let’s talk about the internals and other hardware aspects of the phone.
Compared to the Pixel 3 XL, the 3a XL isn’t as powerful. It is powered by the Snapdragon 670 processor, which is paired with 4GB RAM and up to 64GB of internal storage. The Pixel 3 XL has the previous generation Snapdragon 845 flagship processor, same amount of RAM, but up to 128GB of storage. Both phones feature eSIM functionality as well. However, the most impressive feature of the new device, is the rear camera. It will be equipped with the same amazing 12-megapixel snapper that’s present on the more expensive Pixel 3 XL. This is great news for shutter bugs, as there’s no denying that the Pixel 3 has one of the best cameras on a phone.
To make the Pixel 3a XL cheaper, Google had to remove wireless charging. However, the phone features a larger 3,700mAh battery compared to the 3,430mAh cell on the Pixel 3 XL. It supports 18W fast charging via the USB Type-C port. However, the phone does not come with any IP rating, so you cannot take it swimming or dance with it in the rain.
Thus, the Pixel 3a XL is for those who want an excellent camera, but aren’t that keen on having a premium glass body, IP rating, wireless charging, and blazing fast performance.
